Rain took a deep breath as she stepped back into her office after wrapping up the trial. The air of accomplishment lingered around her, and she couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride.
“Congratulations, Prosecutor Lancaster!” Jane greeted her enthusiastically, practically bouncing on her feet.
Rain smiled warmly, setting her files down. “Thank you, Jane. I couldn’t have done it without you, Marlon, and Matt’s assistance. Teamwork truly makes all the difference p>
Jane waved off the compliment with a playful grin. “Ah, it’s nothing. Even when you were on leave yesterday, you were practically working nonstop. I mean, I sent you files, and you had them studied before I even had time to blink p>
Rain chuckled at the remark. It was true. Despite her brief day off, she had poured over case details late into the night. She had adopted the Lancaster surname with pride, and with it came a desire to uphold the prestige it carried.
“I just want to make sure I’m doing my best,” Rain said, her voice steady with determination. Bringing honor to Alexander’s name was very important to her.
“Hah, how about a little acknowledgement for me too? I’m practically drowning in work whenever you take a leave!” Henry grumbled, emerging from his private office with an exaggerated sigh.

Jane raised an eyebrow, eyeing Henry suspiciously. “Something’s changed about you. How come you’re all soft now? You used to bark orders nonstop and make life miserable for your partners. But now p>
“She’s a Lancaster,” Henry interjected with a smirk. “I wouldn’t want her husband showing up at my door p>
Jane crossed her arms, unconvinced. “That’s not convincing after working with you for years. What’s really going on p>
Henry scowled playfully. “Stop assuming and get back to work p>
Before anyone could respond, Matt suddenly switched on the television. “You all need to see this!” he exclaimed.
Rain frowned, turning her attention to the screen. Her brows knitted as the news anchor’s voice filled the room.
“The victim is the wife of the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries,” Rain murmured, absorbing the details. The woman had been kidnapped but she escaped and was now in the hospital, clinging to life.
Henry gestured lazily toward the screen. “You should handle this case, Rain p>
She turned to him, narrowing her eyes. “Why not you p>
“I hate media attention,” Henry replied with a shrug. “But if you ever feel overwhelmed, you know where to find me. You can always dump the case on me p>
With that, he retreated into his office, leaving Rain standing there with a deep breath of resolve. She turned to Jane. “Once the files and reports are finalized for this case, have them on my desk immediately p>
“Yes, Prosecutor Lancaster,” Jane replied with a nod, already moving to make the arrangements.
Rain stepped into her private office and immediately reached for her phone. A soft smile spread across her face as she read Alexander’s text message: ’On my way to pick you up.’ It was a simple message, but it never failed to make her heart flutter.
She sat down at her desk, a lightness in her chest as she glanced at the stack of papers in front of her. Determined to finish up her remaining tasks in anticipation of seeing Alexander soon.
It was amusing how much she looked forward to his company, even though they’d seen each other just that morning. The thought made her chuckle. She wasn’t usually the clingy type, but with Alexander, it was different.
Her cheeks warmed as she admitted to herself how much she cherished these moments, no matter how small or mundane. A knock on the door pulled Rain from her daydreaming about Alexander. She quickly straightened up as Jane entered, holding a package.
“Prosecutor Lancaster, this came for you,” Jane announced, setting the box on Rain’s desk.

As soon as Jane left, curiosity got the better of her, and she tore open the package. Inside were the picture frames she had ordered online. Her heart warmed as she looked through them… two frames featuring her and Alexander together, captured during a horseback ride, and two solo shots, one of herself and one of Alexander.
Rain admired the photos for a moment, her fingertips lightly brushing the edge of Alexander’s picture, a tender smile forming on her lips. Carefully, she slipped her solo shot and one of them together into a paper bag, planning to surprise Alexander with them later.
Turning her attention back to the remaining two frames, Rain placed them on her desk. One was the picture of Alexander on horseback, his expression calm yet strikingly confident, a shot she had taken herself.
She leaned back in her chair, her gaze lingering on his photo. It felt as though his presence filled the room, offering a sense of comfort and motivation. A soft sigh escaped her lips as she thought, ’How does he always manage to inspire me, even when he isn’t here p>
Rain chuckled to herself, realizing just how much her thoughts revolved around Alexander. She had obviously fallen so hard for her husband, and it amused her how the feelings grew stronger every day.
’I’ve completely lost myself to him,’ she mused, shaking her head with a small laugh. And honestly, she didn’t mind it one bit. Every detail of her life felt brighter with Alexander in it, even her workspace seemed to radiate his presence now.
If not for her phone ringing, Rain might have stayed lost in her daydreams. She quickly answered.
“Rain, we’ve found the location where Michael is keeping Madame Beck’s son and his family, a wife and two kids,” Brandon reported on the other end of the line.
Rain’s eyes lit up. “That’s incredible news, Brandon. Once we can secure Beck’s family, we’ll have the leverage we need to convince her to testify as a state witness against Michael p>
Her mind immediately shifted into action mode. “What’s the status? Do we have a team ready to move p>
“Yes, but we’re coordinating carefully to avoid tipping Michael off. It’ll require precision,” Brandon said. There was a pause before his tone shifted, more cautious. “Rain, I need to be honest, this operation isn’t a simple one. We’ll need approval from the higher-ups before we can move forward. Michael’s not just dangerous; he’s full of surprises. Every time we think we’re closing in, he seems to stay one step ahead p>
