Chapter 213
Emma’s coffee cup shattered as her three-year-old grandson accidentally turned it into butterflies.
“Oops, Grandma Emma!” little Alex giggled, watching the colorful butterflies flutter around the kitchen. “I meant to make it into juice p>
“It’s okay, sweetie,” Emma laughed, gently catching the butterflies in her hands. With a soft glow of silver light, she transformed them back into her favorite mug, now filled with warm apple juice instead of coffee.
“Grandma, how do you always fix everything so easy?” asked Maya, Alex’s twin sister, who was sitting at the table making her cereal dance in the air.
“Lots and lots of practice,” Emma said, sitting down with them. “When I was your age, I used to accidentally turn things into all sorts of crazy stuff p>
“Really?” Alex’s eyes went wide. “Like what p>
“Well, I once turned my entire bedroom into a swimming pool full of jello p>
Both children burst into laughter.
“That sounds fun!” Maya said. “Why didn’t you keep it that way p>
Emma smiled. “Because your grandfather had to sleep somewhere too p>
The back door opened and Luna walked in, looking tired but happy. At twenty-five, Emma’s daughter had become a wonderful mother, though raising cosmic-powered toddlers was exhausting work.
“How are my little chaos makers?” Luna asked, kissing both twins on the head.
“Grandma Emma is telling us stories about the old days,” Maya announced. “Tell us about when people couldn’t come back from being dead p>
Luna raised an eyebrow at Emma. “You’re telling them about the time before resurrection balance p>
“They asked,” Emma said defensively. “They wanted to know why some of my stories sound so scary p>
It was true. Over the past fifteen years since Emma had sacrificed her original existence to save Luna, the universe had changed completely. Death was no longer permanent for most beings. When someone died, the cosmic balance would usually bring them back within a few days, often in a better version of themselves.
“Tell us, Grandma!” Alex pleaded. “What was it like when dead meant dead forever p>
Emma sat back in her chair, trying to remember what it felt like to live with that kind of fear. “Well, back then, when someone you loved died, you might never see them again. People were much more careful because they knew they only had one life p>
“That sounds terrible,” Maya said, her cereal stopping its dance mid-air. “What if someone made a mistake p>
“That’s why we fought so hard to change things,” Emma explained. “We wanted a world where mistakes didn’t have to be permanent, where love was stronger than death p>
“Is that why you gave up your first life to save Mommy?” Alex asked seriously.
Emma felt her heart squeeze. Even at three years old, the twins understood more about sacrifice than most adults ever would.
“Yes,” she said simply. “Sometimes loving someone means being willing to give up everything for them p>
“But you came back too,” Maya pointed out. “So it all worked out p>
“It did,” Emma agreed. “Though I’m not exactly the same person I was before p>
This was true. When the Keeper of Cosmic Destinies had brought Emma back after her sacrifice, she had returned with new abilities. She could now see the connections between all living things, could sense when the cosmic balance was threatened, and most importantly, she aged much more slowly than normal humans.
“Grandma Emma,” Alex said suddenly, “why do you look sad when you talk about the old days p>
Emma was surprised. She didn’t realize her emotions showed so clearly.
“Because even though we made the universe better, we lost some things too,” she admitted. “Back then, every moment felt precious because we knew it might be our last. People told each other they loved them more often. They didn’t waste time on things that didn’t matter p>
“But now people can fix their mistakes,” Luna pointed out. “Isn’t that better p>
“Yes and no,” Emma said thoughtfully. “Some people don’t try as hard because they know they can always start over. They don’t appreciate what they have p>
Before anyone could respond, the kitchen suddenly filled with a bright golden light. The twins immediately hid behind Emma as a figure materialized in the center of the room.
It was the Original Council Elder, looking more worried than Emma had ever seen him.
“Emma,” he said urgently. “We need your help. Something terrible is happening p>
“What’s wrong?” Emma asked, standing up and positioning herself protectively in front of the children.
“The resurrection balance is breaking down,” the Elder explained. “People who should be coming back aren’t returning. And worse, some who have been brought back multiple times are starting to lose their memories, their personalities. They’re becoming hollow shells p>
Emma felt ice form in her stomach. “How long do we have p>
“Days, maybe hours. If we can’t fix this, death might become permanent again for everyone. But this time, it won’t be natural death – it will be complete erasure from existence p>
Luna grabbed the twins and held them close. “What caused this p>
“We think someone is deliberately sabotaging the cosmic balance,” the Elder said grimly. “Someone with the power to affect the fundamental forces of life and death p>
Emma’s mind raced. Only a few beings had that level of power, and most of them were her friends now.
“Do you have any idea who?” she asked.
“That’s the problem,” the Elder replied. “The sabotage is coming from inside the Cosmic Council itself. Someone we trust has been working to destroy everything you helped create p>
Maya tugged on Emma’s sleeve. “Grandma, what does that mean p>
Emma knelt down to the children’s level, trying to keep her voice calm. “It means someone is trying to break the magic that brings people back when they die p>
“But why would someone do that?” Alex asked, his lower lip trembling.
“Because,” said a new voice from the doorway, “some of us believe the universe was better when death meant something p>
Emma spun around to see Marcus standing in the kitchen doorway. But something was wrong with him. His eyes held a coldness she’d never seen before, and his presence felt different somehow.
“Marcus?” Luna said uncertainly. “What are you talking about p>
“I’m talking about fixing the mistake we made fifteen years ago,” Marcus replied, stepping into the room. “The resurrection balance has made beings weak, careless, meaningless. They don’t value life anymore because they know it’s not really permanent p>
Emma felt her power flare as she realized the truth. “You’re the one sabotaging the cosmic balance p>
“I’m saving the universe from becoming a place where nothing matters,” Marcus said coldly. “Where children grow up thinking death is just another game, where love means nothing because you can always get another chance p>
“Uncle Marcus?” Alex said in a small voice. “Are you going to hurt us p>
Marcus looked at the children, and for a moment, Emma saw the man she’d known for years. But then his expression hardened again.
“I’m going to save you,” he said. “All of you. Even if you can’t understand why p>
Emma stepped between Marcus and her family. “I won’t let you destroy what we built p>
“You don’t have a choice,” Marcus replied. “I’ve already set the final stage in motion. In exactly one hour, every being who has ever been brought back by the resurrection balance will die again – this time permanently. The universe will return to the way it was meant to be p>
“That includes Mommy,” Maya whispered, understanding dawning in her young eyes. “And probably us too p>
Emma felt rage and terror battling in her chest. Marcus wasn’t just threatening to end the resurrection balance – he was planning to commit genocide on a cosmic scale.
“There has to be another way,” she said desperately.
“There is,” Marcus said quietly. “You can come with me willingly, and I’ll make sure your family dies peacefully instead of in agony p>
Emma looked at Luna, who was holding the twins tightly. She looked at the Elder, who seemed frozen in shock. She looked at Marcus, someone she’d trusted with her life countless times.
In one hour, everyone she loved would be dead forever, and the universe would return to a time when death was final and love could be lost in an instant.
Unless she could somehow stop the person who knew all her weaknesses and had been planning this betrayal for years.
Emma realized she was about to fight the most important battle of her life – and she might have to do it alone.
