Blythe’s lips curled into a smirk as she took in the scene before her. So Lisette wasn’t entirely hopeless after all—she’d actually pulled it off.
“Well, Ms. White, come to watch the spectacle?” Portia called out with a wave. “You’re just in time-the best part’s happening inside! Don’t miss it p>
Blythe hesitated when she saw Portia. Wasn’t this one of Calliope’s so-called close friends? She didn’t look the least bit concerned on the contrary, she seemed positively giddy.
Probably just as jealous of Calliope as the rest of them, playing best friend while secretly hoping to see her fall.
Now that something was finally happening to Calliope, Portia looked like she was having the time of her life.
With a superior glance at Portia, Blythe swept past her and headed inside. Portia just shrugged, a faint smile playing on her lips-she found Blythe’s high-and-mighty act rather entertaining.
Glancing over her shoulder, Portia watched as Blythe entered the room. She saw Blythe’s previously frosty expression crack and crumble in an instant.
She hadn’t expected this-not at all.
Lisette, the very person who had conspired with her against Calliope, was the one sprawled on Robert’s bed. What kind of stupidity was this? Just a moment ago, Blythe had been gloating, convinced that Calliope was done for; yet instead, the one disgraced was Lisette, the world-class idiot herself.
Lisette’s eyes latched onto Blythe’s.
Don’t look at me, Blythe thought viciously. You utter dunce—what do you think I can do for you right now? In a mess like this?
Fuming, Blythe turned to leave-only to be greeted by Portia’s unmistakably smug expression. She didn’t need to say a word; her sheer delight was perfectly obvious.
Blythe bristled.
“Blythe, help me!” Lisette wailed,
hurrying toward her, barely clutching a bedsheet around herself. “You know + didn’t end up in Robert’s bed on purpose! Yaycan vouch fo me-Calliope set me up p>
“She’s a snake—she trapped me!” Lisette cried, reaching desperately for Blythe.
“You know what happened, right p>
Blythe danced away from Lisette’s grasp, her face twisted in disgust. “Imbecile,” she muttered, so quietly only Lisette could hear.
Lisette stared at her, stunned. She could hardly believe it.
“Ms. Jewell,” Blythe said coldly, “why would I know anything about your personal affairs? We’re not exactly close are we?” She lifted her chin and addressed the cluster of onlookers. “Sorry, it seems I’ve wandered into the wrong place p>
People in the crowd nodded along-Blythe was, after all, Jett White’s daughter. How could she possibly mix with someone as lowly as Lisette?
“Blythe!” Lisette cried, her voice breaking. “We’re supposed to be in this together, aren’t we?” Did she really intend to abandon her like this, with her reputation in tatters?
“I honestly have no idea what you’re talking about,” Blythe replied, her eyes icy. “Ms. Jewell, why don’t you get dressed? Everyone’s watching p>
Lisette, hopeless and humiliated, could only stare.
What an idiot, Blythe thought, shaking her head. No wonder she lagged so far behind Calliope-shez never stood a chance. To think she’d come begging for help now,
expecting Blythe
corroborate her
story. What did she want
admission that they’d plotted to frame Calliope in the first place?
Ridiculous. Blythe never should have
come-she’d witnessed more than enough sordid drama for one day.
