Chapter 952
Nigel’s face clouded with annoyance just at the mention of Black Spider-he looked like a man with a headache he couldn’t shake.
“Is there history between you and Black Spider?” Damien asked, his curiosity piqued. “Did he ever cross you, Mr. Howell p>
“You could say that.” Nigel leaned his head back and closed his eyes, making it perfectly clear he had no interest in dredging up old stories.
Damien decided not to push-he’d rather not risk being tossed out onto the pavement.
They soon arrived at Black Spider’s turf.
“Stop them!” someone shouted.
The road ahead was suddenly blocked by a spike strip-and a net stretched taut across the asphalt. A gang of men charged out, scowling and bristling with hostility as they surrounded Nigel’s convoy.
At their head was a striking man dressed all in black, his features sharp and almost too handsome, a silver spider-shaped earring glinting from his ear.
“Let me guess—that’s Black Spider?” Damien muttered under his breath, casting a sideways glance at Nigel. But Nigel had already covered his face with one hand. For the first time, Damien saw something perilously close to despair on Nigel’s usually composed face. He looked ready to shatter.
“Nigel, hey, you alright?” Damien whispered. “Honestly, what did you get into with this guy? You look like you’d rather run into a firing squad p>
Nigel just let the silence hang.
“Get out of the car!” Black Spider bellowed.
His men rushed in, wrenched open the doors, and aimed cold metal at their heads, forcing everyone out at gunpoint.
Damien and the others climbed out without protest. The other side might not have been brilliant, but numbers were definitely on their side.
“Was it you who attacked my men?” Black Spider’s voice was thick with anger as he strode forward.
“What are you talking about? We haven’t hurt anyone!” Damien shot back. “You’ve got the wrong people, buddy p>
“Ha! I’m not so easily fooled.” Black Spider sneered. “Nobody passes through here without paying protection first p>
Damien nearly laughed-protection fees? This had to be the strangest mafia boss he’d ever met. He shot a glance back at Nigel, who’d somehow produced a hat and was using it to shield his face.
“Hey, you what’s with all the skulking? Black Spider snarled, jabbing a finger in Nigel’s direction. “You must be the one who attacked us! What, hiding your face because you’re ashamed? ‘
He advanced, looking thunderous. “You seriously think you can pull this crap on my turf? Are you tired of living p>
Voice muffled, Nigel tried to talk his way out. Look, you’re mistaken. Whoever caused you trouble already pässed through. We’re just passing – by. If you hurry, you might catch them up ahead p>
Black Spider glared. “Quit covering your face! Let me see—are you that woman who attacked us p>
Just as Nigel tried to duck back, one of the men reached over and yanked off his
hat.
Nigel straightened up, dropping the hunch, his tailored suit and striking features how fully exposed in the open. At the sight of him, Black Spider’s anger Instantly evaporated, replaced with gleeful excitement.
“You! It really is you p>
“You came back for me, didn’t you? You finally made up your mind?” Black Spider’s tone was almost giddy with anticipation.
“Are you ready to marry me? Will you be my wife?” he blurted, hope lighting his entire face.
Damien just stood there, dumbfounded, flicking his gaze from Nigel to Black Spider and back again.
Holy hell. Now, that’s a plot twist.
