Chapter 620:
The heavy front doors opened before she reached the steps. The head butler stood there, his face a mask of carved stone. He offered no greeting. He simply turned and walked into the dimly lit foyer, expecting her to follow.
Belle swallowed. Her throat was completely dry.
She followed the butler up the grand sweeping staircase and down a long, silent corridor. They bypassed the bright, airy drawing rooms and moved toward the deepest part of the residential wing. The butler stopped before a heavy oak door, opened it without knocking, and stepped aside.
Belle walked in.
The study was suffocatingly dark. The chandelier was off. The only light came from the stone fireplace, where thick logs burned with a low, angry hiss, their orange glow casting long, distorted shadows across the walls.
Beatrice Lancaster sat behind a massive mahogany desk, looking down at a thick stack of papers bound in a black folder.
Belle stopped in the center of the Persian rug and stretched her lips into what she hoped resembled a confident smile. “Good morning, Madam Lancaster,” she said. Her voice sounded thin and reedy in the large room.
Beatrice did not look up. She did not acknowledge the greeting.
The silence stretched out, heavy and deliberate. A bead of cold sweat slid down Belle’s spine. Her lungs felt tight.
Then Beatrice picked up the folder and slammed it down onto the polished surface of the desk.

The crack echoed off the wood-paneled walls like a gunshot. Belle physically jumped, her shoulders jerking upward in pure shock.
“Look at it,” Beatrice commanded. Her voice was low, raspy, and entirely devoid of warmth.
Belle took two hesitant steps forward and looked down. The folder bore the InnoTech logo. Below it was a comprehensive financial audit report, the numbers on the summary page printed entirely in red.
“Your cash burn rate over the last ninety days has exceeded the industry warning line by four hundred percent,” Beatrice said, her pale eyes finally locking onto Belle. “You are bleeding capital p>
The blood drained from Belle’s face. Her hands began to tremble. “The research and development cycle for aerospace technology is highly capital-intensive,” she rushed to explain, her words tumbling out in a frantic cascade. “We are on the verge of a breakthrough. The algorithms p>
“Stop talking,” Beatrice snapped.
The command was so absolute that Belle’s mouth closed. Her teeth clicked together.
“Your performance at dinner last night, combined with the public relations disaster you orchestrated in the morning paper, has damaged the Lancaster name,” Beatrice continued. “I do not tolerate liabilities p>
Belle stopped breathing. Her chest felt as though it were being crushed in a vice.
“I am issuing my final decision,” Beatrice announced. “The Lancaster trust fund is indefinitely suspending the next round of your two-hundred-million-dollar capital injection p>
The words hit Belle like a blow to the head.
Her vision blurred. The room spun. That money was the only thing standing between InnoTech and a catastrophic default on its vendor loans. Without it, the company would be forced into bankruptcy within thirty days.
“No,” Belle gasped, all pretense of dignity dissolving. “You cannot do that. The company will die p>
