Chapter 706:

The financial threat had backed him into a corner. He knew he had to act before they left Boston — or he was finished anyway.

The sky over Boston turned a bruised, heavy grey by two in the afternoon. A bitter wind whipped off the Charles River, carrying the biting promise of winter.

Isolde and Maxwell walked out onto the hotel’s second-floor outdoor terrace. They had just finished a grueling two-hour video conference with the military brass at the Pentagon, and Isolde needed cold air to clear the numerical fatigue from her mind. Maxwell, ever vigilant after the morning’s threats, stood a few feet away with his back to the wall, scanning the entrances. The terrace was mostly deserted, save for a few staff members clearing tables at the far end.

At the far edge of the terrace, a massive infinity pool blended seamlessly with the grey horizon. The water was dark and churning slightly in the wind, its temperature hovering just above freezing.

Isolde walked to the edge and leaned against the low glass railing, closing her eyes and letting the cold air numb her skin.

Maxwell’s encrypted satellite phone buzzed with an urgent, high-priority tone. He glanced at the screen, saw it was Pentagon Cyber Command, and gave Isolde a quick, apologetic nod. He turned and walked ten paces toward the building for better reception, his attention momentarily diverted.

He did not hear the frantic clicking of heels until it was too late.

Belle stormed onto the terrace, her hair blown wild by the wind, her eyes wide and manic. Daron had just screamed at her in the lobby, blaming her for the entire disaster and threatening to cut her off completely. She had nothing left to lose.

She marched directly up to Isolde’s back.

“You think you are so perfect,” Belle shrieked over the sound of the wind. “You think you can just ruin my life and walk away? You are nothing but a discarded, bitter housewife pretending to be a genius p>

Isolde did not turn around. She kept her eyes on the grey horizon, feeling a profound, exhausting boredom settle over her.

“Perform elsewhere,” Isolde said. The words were flat, carrying zero emotional weight.

The dismissal snapped the last thread of Belle’s sanity. She glanced back at the glass doors leading into the hotel. Daron was standing just inside the lobby, watching them with cold, expectant eyes.

Belle made her choice.

She let out a short, sharp scream. She twisted her upper body and threw her entire weight forward, slamming her shoulder violently into the center of Isolde’s back.

Isolde was standing inches from the edge, completely off balance. The impact launched her forward over the low railing.

A violent splash echoed across the empty terrace.

Isolde hit the freezing water hard. The shock was instantaneous and paralyzing — a thousand icy needles driving directly into her chest, all air expelled violently from her lungs. She opened her mouth to gasp and freezing water rushed into her throat. She choked, panic detonating in her brain.
