In the end, Uriah couldn’t bring himself to stay in Mavis’s hospital room any longer.
After leaving, he made it a point to track down Mavis’s primary physician. As much as he tried, he simply couldn’t accept the fact that she’d forgotten only him.
The doctor regarded Uriah with a look of mild discomfort. “Whether her amnesia is genuine or not, I honestly can’t tell you,” he admitted. “But really, I can’t imagine why a patient would pretend to forget someone. Her injuries were quite severe-she’s lucky to be alive at all. Damage to her memory is entirely plausible p>
“As for whether she’ll recover those memories, that’s impossible to predict,” the doctor continued. “Some people regain everything overnight. Others—well, some things just never come back. My advice? If her daily life isn’t affected, maybe don’t obsess over what she does and doesn’t remember. She still recognizes most people, right p>
“Even if she’s forgotten you, you can always try walking her through your history together. Her memory’s impaired, but her ability to reason and understand is perfectly intact,” he said.
“So… it’s normal for her memory loss to be so specific-just the parts related to me?” Uriah asked, his voice tight with frustration.
He might be able to help her fill in the blanks, but her distant, guarded manner made that hard to imagine. The more he dwelled on it, the more suffocated he felt.
“That’s absolutely normal,” the doctor answered gently. “Amnesia often isn’t all or nothing. The mind tends to block out the people and moments most tightly wound up with traumatic events. She was injured because of you—maybe her subconscious is just trying to shield her from that pain p>
“Mr. Stewart, honestly, there’s no need to lose sleep over this. The important thing is -she survived. And as far as I know, she’s only missing a handful of memories p>
“Let’s be honest-do you two really have some epic, once-in-a-lifetime moments together? Times she’d never forget? Perhaps try showing her some old photos. Sometimes that triggers something. But from my end, there’s really not much more I can do. This kind of memory loss is subjective—it’s family or close friends who usually help fill in the gaps. I wouldn’t have any idea about her history anyway,” the doctor added, his voice earnest and open.
Uriah said nothing. If Mavis were willing to try reclaiming their past, he wouldn’t be standing here grilling the doctor. And as for those photos p>
Thinking it over, he realized just how little they’d shared that was worth reminiscing about. There were barely any pictures of the two of them together-most of their time had been spent on assignments, his demeanor strict and formal..net
Any memories worth treasuring? Did they really have them?
He didn’t resent her for the memory loss itself. It was the fact that she no longer loyed him that stung. That was what he truly couldn’t accept And worse than that was his wounded pride he had once meant the world to her, yet now she’d erased him so completely. He hated that those feelings could disappear so easily.
Uriah left the doctor’s office, mind whirling with confusion and frustration. He wasn’t even sure what he was chasing after anymore.
The doctor watched him go, lips twitching in bemusement. Scratching his head, he wondered what, exactly, Uriah was so upset about.
Meanwhile, back in Mavis’s hospital
room, she sampled the breakfast Portia rad brought and asked, her
tone studiedly casual So, his family is arranging a marriage for him, huh p>
“Who?” Portia blinked, slow to catch on.
A couple of seconds later, realization dawned. “Oh, you mean Uriah p>
“Yeah. I heard the Stewarts are setting him up with someone from an old-money family. Supposedly she’s got a great personality, too p>
