The admiration echoed around the room, but Calliope was already tuning them out, her full attention on finishing the operation.
Time ticked by. Finally, as the procedure came to its conclusion, Calliope allowed herself a quiet sigh of relief. “Alright, he’s stable. Sutures, please p>
She stepped away from the table, taking a deep breath as another surgeon moved in. He worked slowly, but every stitch was perfectly placed.
When the last suture was tied and the patient wheeled out, the team drifted out into the corridor, their voices teeming with awe. “If I’d been the lead, there’s no way it would have gone so flawlessly,” one marveled. “How did she even pull that off p>
Another shook his head in wonder. “She made it look almost easy. I’ve never seen anything like it p>
“Well, one thing’s for certain-Mr. Howell is out of danger. That was a textbook success p>
“I’ll say. The Miracle Doctor’s reputation is well-deserved. I learned more from those few hours than I have from a dozen medical conferences p>
“And now I know she’s not the secretive type. Didn’t hide a thing from us, even with all those impressive skills p>
“Dr. Jewell, if you’re ever looking to lecture or take on a residency, please-think of us first. We’d all give anything to learn your technique.” someone teased with a hopeful smile.
Facing a cluster of white-haired men who had trained generations of doctors themselves, Calliope felt a strange, complicated mix of pride and discomfort. She offered a polite smile. “I’m not taking on any students for now. But thank you. If you’ll excuse me, I need to get going p>
But the moment she stepped outside the operating suite, chaos erupted-Nigel’s men, more than a hundred strong, packed the waiting area from wall to wall. Damien had been pushed off to one side, looking ready to lose his patience entirely.
“Ms. Jewell, how’s Mr. Howell? Was the surgery a success p>
“Doctor, is our boss okay p>
“You did it, didn’t you? He’s alright p>
Questions tumbled over each other as anxious faces crowded the exit, blocking her path.
Calliope raised her voice a little above the din. “The surgery went perfectly. He’s out of danger now. Just make sure he gets plenty of rest and good care p>
A cheer broke out.
“Thank goodness p>
“Thank you, Miracle Doctor p>
“Our boss is safe, finally p>
“Now we can relax p>
Just then, Nigel appeared, being wheeled from post-op, and the mob swirled after him, relief written on every face. Within moments, the waiting area had cleared out.
Damien made his way over. “Ma’am, are you alright? The operation went well p>
“Very well,” Calliope replied, giving him a relieved nod. “Let me get changed, and then we can head home p>
“Of course.” Damien gave a quick nod.
Soon, they were driving back toward Myers Manor. But near the estate gates, their car was blocked by a line of figures standing resolutely in the road, Monty Zelda, Horatio and Valerian.
“What are they doing here?” Damien grumbled, scowling. “Do they have no shame at all p>
Calliope glanced at them coolly. “They’re here for money, I’d bet.” Without waiting, she pushed open her door and got out.
