I had never seen Richard hit anyone, but today he slapped Lily with such force that
five distinct fingerprints instantly appeared on her fair, delicate skin.
Blood began to seep from the corner of her mouth.

I handed a handkerchief to Lily. “Whatever the reason, it’s no excuse to hurt others p>

Seeing me return to my room, Richard glanced at his watch. “I still have some business to take care of before I turn in. See you tomorrow p>

I checked my phone. Max had really gone the entire day without contacting me.
Even though I had blocked him, he could have easily called Richard.
“Did Max try to call you today?” I couldn’t stop myself from asking Richard.
He shook his head.
“If you miss him that much, you should unblock him and clear things up p>
I shrugged and closed the door.
I had just lied down when Helen knocked. “Claire, may I come in p>
“Come in.” I saw Helen holding a bowl of soup and knew she was here to feed me again.
“It seems Max contacted you today p>
Helen approached with a smile. “Mr. Hilton said he knows you’re probably angry and
that he’ll come apologize in person once this is all over p>
I forced a smile. “Don’t bother. I’m
not interested in a man who gets engaged to me and then to
someone else. Are the marriage laws in Serythia always this Chaotic?
Is there no rule of law p>
Helen covered her mouth and chuckled. “Mr. Hilton *is* the law in Serythia. It was just a temporary measure p>
I scoffed.
A temporary measure that involved them living together, calling each other intimately, and him blocking me on social media because he was afraid I’d keep messaging him.
“Go ahead, make excuses for him p>
I took a few sips of the soup before pushing it back toward Helen. As much as I was fuming, I knew I had to take care of myself.
After Helen left, I snuck out and headed for the place where Lily was being held.
As I neared the entrance, I was surprised to find no one guarding it.
My brow furrowed. I crept cautiously along the wall. Before I even got close, I heard Lily’s mocking laughter. “You’re so good to her. Isn’t it because you feel guilty p>
