.. honey~ …. Wake up. GARRY~~~” Diana’s voice echoed in the room as she tried to wake him up.
Garry woke up with a start, panting heavily. His back slick with cold sweat. His hands clamped tightly. He glanced at his surroundings in a daze. Once he realized he was in his bedroom, beside his wife, in Damona, he breathed a sigh of relief.
Diana, still worried sick, asked, “Honey, were you having sleep paralysis? You kept mumbling in your sleep…. asking to save someone and calling yourself a monster. Is everything okay with you?”
Garry nodded hesitantly, “I am fine. Just some work stress. Don’t worry about it,” he tried to reassure her.
“Are you sure? You are not hiding anything from me?” Diana stared at him with narrowed eyes. “If there’s anything, you can tell me.”
“Don’t overthink. The work at the office has been insane,” he placed a light pack on her forehead and added, “Sorry to disturb your sleep. It’s still wee hours; you should rest some more.” Saying this, he wrapped his arms around her and patted her head gently. Soon Diana drifted to sleep, but Garry remained wide awake.
Truth be told, he had been having such nightmares for the past two weeks. He had been spending all his time in his office, even sleeping there, so he didn’t know he was sleep talking about it. He had tried to ignore it, but Amelia’s blood dripping eyes, her blank expression, her hollowed cheeks, the baby in her arms- everything felt vivid to him as if it was real.
After not sleeping a wink, as the sun rose in the sky, he came to a conclusion. He wanted to know about the girl he could not save. So, the first thing he did when he reached his office was to get intel on Amelia’s situation.
Robin Carcello, who left the underworld and came with him to Damona, has been gathering information behind Garry’s back. He immediately told him how the poor girl was suffering. She was not only pregnant with a girl child. But Denver and her sister have made sure to ruin her reputation so they could easily isolate her from others.
Garry’s heart twinged with raw pain. The bright, innocent, ambitious girl was trapped in a façade of a relationship, and he had played a major part in it. He, then and there, decided to rescue her and at the same time put an end to this madness once and for all.
He took out a stack of folders from his hidden drawer and said to Robin, “Send information to the Wareham family and tell them about Denver’s whereabouts.”
“On it, boss,” Robin replied and quickly departed from the room.
Garry then traced the name on the document: Jacob Larson, the ruthless vampire king. Tapping his finger twice, he made a call, “Arrange an appointment with Chairperson Larson for me~ … as early as possible.”
A week later, he took a flight and reached the Larson headquarters for the meeting, under the pretext of discussing business matters. Jacob already knew Garry from his previous line of work. Jacob had visited the underground several times.
“Garry Yates, why did you retire so abruptly from the underground? You were doing quite well for yourself there.” Jacob asked.
“Unlike you~ … I am an old man now. I want to live an ordinary life with my family,” he said, smiling.
Jacob understood and didn’t ask any questions. Once it was time to go back, Garry, while departing, hinted at something, “Chairperson Larson~ …. I might not be the underground boss anymore, but~ …. I would still like to give you a piece of advice as an ordinary man.
“And what is it?” Jacob asked.
“In Gouldland, there is a hidden artwork of the night sky, painted in red. You should check it out sometime. You will definitely be interested in it.” After delivering his piece, he walked out of the room.
Jacob immediately understood the meaning and asked Chris to look into the matter. Gouldland was Alpha Keith’s territory, the place where the first ritual had taken place. The artwork of the night sky Garry had referred to meant ’Nocturne,’ Brian Tape’s clan’s name. As for red paint, it was a clear cut indication for Crimson Court, Catherine’s Coven.
Within ten days, after confirming Catherine and Brian were having secret meetings with people of other origins, Jacob raided the place with his keepers unit and busted them all. Apart from Denver, who had been by Amelia’s side as she was in her eighth month, everyone was there.
Upon arriving, Jacob saw Catherine Richards and Brian Tape partying with Casper Everests, who had been banished; corrupted Keith Snow, his crazy son, Caiten Snow, and members of the bear tribe, all of whom had also been cast out by their communities. Though they had covered up everything about the operation, being seen on friendly terms with the outcasts was enough to face Jacob’s wrath.
Jacob’s people beat all of them up quite badly, and once they were done, Catherine and Brian were dragged back. He wanted to punish them brutally to set an example, but the then Clan Elder, Slater, didn’t let him. He even asked not to blow it out of proportion and just sweep the matter under the rug, as it wasn’t a big deal. Plus, it would disrupt the reputation of the vampire kingdom and eventually his. So, in the end, they were confined within their respective clan houses with a divine spell for three years, not allowed to even take a step outside with minimal things to live on.
As for Denver, the Warehams had chased him to his city, constantly asking him to meet them, else they would come to his house. On the day Amelia went into labor, he had gone to set the score straight with them, leaving her with Vienna.
He had already arranged a healer, disguised as a private doctor, for the baby’s delivery. Garry knew about it and asked his men to be prepared to rescue Amelia midway. But before they could act, Robin called, telling him that Amelia’s water had broken and she was admitted to a public hospital.
It was a chance, a chance given by the god above, and he took it. Instead of sending his men and getting caught, he hired two nobodies, and the rest is history.
