Chapter 568 I Promise I Will Avenge You
(Author’s POV)
Jacob bolted, then went dashing towards Iris. Like a child, he clung to her sleeve and asked, “How is he? How’s the child?” his voice came out constricted, vulnerable. The four brothers stepped forward as well, waiting patiently for Healer Hector’s reply.
“Your majesty, the surgery~ …. was a success,” Iris relayed the news.
Hearing her words, Jacob suddenly felt as if the heavy stone rolling on his chest had vanished. He realised he had been holding his breath for too long and finally exhaled. His grip on Iris’s sleeve loosened as he mumbled words full of gratitude, his voice hoarse, “Thank you~ …. Thank you so much, Iris. Thank you for saving his life. I will always remain indebted to you,” his strong stature crumbling in front of everyone as his eyes were filled with fresh, unrestrained tears.
His choice of words left the brothers looking at him with pure astonishment. Indebted over Fabian’s life, those words felt heavy, coming from the vampire king himself.
Iris licked her lower lip; her face still held some tension. Taking a deep breath, she added, “Your majesty~ …. there is something more. Fabian~ … is not completely out of danger. The laceration on his chest was too deep and severe. Due to which he had lost a lot of blood. We have done all we could, but the next twenty four hours will be very crucial for him.” Then, with a slight pause and tight voice, she said the difficult part, “Anything could happen. You need to be prepared.”
Jacob felt a sharp, thorny pang in his chest. Yet he tried to display a strong front. “Alright,” he said. “Can I~ …. can I see him?”
“You may~ …” saying this, Iris stepped aside. “He has just had surgery, so you need to clean your hands and wear proper gear to enter.”
Jacob didn’t wait any longer. He hurriedly unscrewed the tap, scratching his hands to wash off the bloodstain and dirt. In the process, his skin was ready to be peeled off, but he didn’t care. Then, putting on the spare isolation gown and face mask, he rushed inside the room, without looking back.
Seeing the urgency in his footsteps, the brothers exchanged curious glances. They all were thinking the same thing. Brave decided to be straightforward as he questioned, “Healer Hector, what exactly is Chairman Larson’s relationship with Fabian?”
Iris pursed her lips. She knew very well that the day was nearing when Fabian’s real identity would be out in the open, yet it was not her place to reveal the truth, so she replied, her voice even, “Young Alpha Brave, I do not possess the authority to share it. To suffice your curiosity, you will have to ask his majesty directly.” With that, she gave a polite nod, turned around and walked back inside.
Once the door was completely shut, Dion remarked, “I have always had my doubts about him, but by the way things have unfolded and how Chairman Larson’s attitude toward Fabian has been, I am one hundred percent sure now they have an extremely close relationship.”
Elio, recalling something, snapped his fingers and quickly added, “Indeed. Earlier, when we came back, I heard Gunnar saying that the young master had taken a hit while saving the vampire king. The one who had taken the brunt is Fabian.”
“Young master? You sure he called Fabian that?” Alaric queried, his brows knitted.
“Yes, brother Al. I am definitely sure,” Elio said reassuringly. “They were talking about Fabian.”
Brave and Alaric exchanged glances as little by little the pieces of the jumbled puzzle started to fall into place. Fabian’s desperate reaction when Jacob was drowning deep in the sea, and now, there was definitely something.
Jacob’s steps faltered right in front of Fabian’s bed as he looked down at his grandson’s weak body. The constant sound of monitors beeping and Fabian’s body attached with wires and tubes made his eyes moist once again. Seeing his own flesh and blood, lying like that, was suffocating. Now, he knew how Fabian must have felt.
His last words echoed inside his head as he took a lead like step forward, ’Didn’t I say I would protect you? I am just keeping my promise.’
He took a seat. Wiping off his tears, he murmured, “Child, when I first discovered you twenty four years ago, your five year self was lying in the pool of blood and torn flesh. I couldn’t protect your family or your loved ones then, but I vowed to protect you, always. I vowed never to let you experience anything that dreadful ever again. But, today~ …. I failed you. I failed your mother. This grandfather of yours failed you.” A knot tied in his throat, his shoulders shook as he lowered his head in deep, raw regret.
Raising his head, he stared straight at his feeble figure and mumbled, his words full of rage and determination, “But this time, I promise. I won’t let anything happen to you. And the ones you dared to touch, even a single strand of your hair~ …. none of them would be spared. I will weed out every single one and torture them until they beg on their knees to be killed. I, the king of vampires, would avenge you, even if I have to burn down the entire world.”

Myra took out her phone to call Brave. She had decided to give him a firm answer and part ways with the situation cleanly. But before she could make the call, Wendy’s name displayed on the screen. She instantly picked it up.
“Hello, sis,” Wendy said, her voice sounding urgent.
“Hello, Wendy~ …. what is it?” Myra inquired.
“Do you know where sis Yelena has gone? I have been trying to reach her, but she isn’t replying to any of my calls or messages,” Wendy told her. “It is unreachable.”
“She must be at home,” Myra remarked.
Wendy quickly replied, “I just came, and she is nowhere to be seen. Mom and Dad also have no idea.”
“Huhh??? When did you last call her?” she asked.
“About ten minutes ago,” Wendy uttered.
“Alright. My last class has just ended. I will go look for her in her department building,” Myra said. “Don’t worry. Her phone must have powered off.”
“Ohk, I will wait for you both,” Wendy said and disconnected the call.
