Alexander’s face darkened. He knew the truth all too well. “I grew up with Carla, Eric. I know her better than anyone. I know exactly what she’s capable of. Anyway, I’ll call you when I need something. For now, keep me updated on Aunt Summer’s condition. I’ll try to visit with Rain next week p>
The call ended, and Alexander gazed out at the moonlit ocean, his thoughts drifting back to Carla. He remembered the time when he’d pitied her, when he had accepted her, feeling sorry for the pressures she’d faced growing up with the Cartier name. She had always struggled to prove herself beyond her family’s shadow, desperate not to be seen as just another rich girl.
She’d often had nervous breakdowns and fallen into depression. But whenever she was with him, she’d said that he made her forget about all the pressures surrounding her. He had become her escape.
