The nurse pushed her wheelchair out of the sunroom. Elbert followed at a measured pace, his gold cane tapping rhythmically against the hardwood floor.
They entered the estate’s monitoring room. On the large flat-screen, the security feed showed the front gates.
Elouise stood in the mud outside, wearing a wrinkled designer trench coat, her hair a tangled mess. She looked nothing like a wealthy society wife. She looked like a desperate, cornered animal — screaming at the impassive guards, demanding to see her former mother-in-law.
The Schneider family was officially bankrupt. Robert had blamed Aspen for everything and filed for divorce to save himself. Elouise had nothing left. Worse, Aspen was sitting in a holding cell, facing serious felony charges for the illegal imprisonment and drugging of Jocelyn.
Elouise knew Elbert Collins was visiting today. She had come to use emotional blackmail to extract money from the billionaires inside.

Elbert lowered himself slowly onto a leather sofa and rested both hands on the top of his cane. He looked down at the woman kneeling on the floor the way one might regard something unpleasant on the bottom of a shoe.
