He suppressed a groan. He wanted to laugh and scream at the same time.

He walked over to the hallway mirror. He removed his charcoal tie — casting the purple one a brief flicker of distaste he quickly hid — and draped it around his neck. The things I do for this woman, he thought, then tied it quickly, expertly.
“I’ll wear it tomorrow,” he said, turning to face her.
“Really?” Jocelyn beamed. “You don’t think it’s too much p>
“Nothing is too much if it’s from you,” he said.

He stepped closer. The air between them shifted, growing heavy and charged.
“You handled the board meeting well?” he asked, his voice dropping an octave.
“I crushed them,” she grinned, feeling a surge of adrenaline.
Gaston smiled — genuine, warm, and dangerous. “Good girl p>
The praise hit her like a physical blow. Her stomach flipped. Heat pooled low in her belly. Those two words, in that low, possessive tone, felt unnervingly similar to the voice from her fever dream. Her mind screamed It’s an act! but her body responded with a shiver she couldn’t control.

He leaned down and buried his face in the crook of her neck. He inhaled deeply.
“You smell like vanilla,” he said. His breath was hot against her skin.
Jocelyn froze. Every instinct screamed at her to lean back, to melt into him. But the contract flashed in her mind. The boyfriend.
“Gaston… personal space,” she managed.
He pulled back instantly. His eyes were dark, unreadable.

Inside his room, Gaston tossed the tie onto the bed and looked at it.
“Purple,” he muttered, running a hand through his hair. “She really thinks I’m a queen p>
He let out a short, bark-like laugh.
“Just wait,” he said to the empty room. “Just wait until she finds out my favorite color is actually her p>
Two days later, the calm was shattered.
Jocelyn was in a strategy meeting with Harvey, planning the logistics for the Tech Summit.
Her cell phone rang. Unknown number. She ignored it.
It rang again immediately — the override function kicked in, something she had set up for emergencies with the hotel staff.
