Carter froze. The threat of total professional humiliation paralyzed him completely.
Pierce grabbed him by the collar and steered him through the heavy, soundproof door of the VIP room at the end of the hall.
The door slammed shut. The deadbolt clicked, sealing them in absolute silence.
The VIP room was pitch black, lit only by a single dim amber bulb above a leather sofa. The air was heavy with the smell of old leather and stale scotch.
The deadbolt snapping shut echoed like a gunshot.
Carter wrenched his arm free of Pierce’s grip. He scrambled backward, his expensive dress shoes slipping on the hardwood until his spine slammed hard against the cold, velvet-paneled wall.
