“If you’re angry, I’ll teach her another lesson,” Jett offered. “What she did was wrong. But she did confess and apologize to me. I’ve already punished her. When she gets back, I’ll make sure she apologizes to you properly p>
“She was in the wrong, so she deserves to be punished and to apologize,” Calliope said with a shrug. “But if she’s already accepted your punishment, then let’s just leave it at that p>
Jett looked at his daughter with surprise. “Callie, you’re such a good person. Even though we weren’t there to raise you, your grandfather did an incredible job. It’s a shame he’s no longer with us. I would have loved to thank him properly p>
“And your brothers and friends,” he continued, his voice emotional. “I heard your brothers took great care of you. Would they be willing to become my godsons? I want to thank them and show my gratitude p>
Jett was visibly moved. He wanted to shower everyone who had ever cared for Calliope with gifts and appreciation. He was bursting with pride and couldn’t wait for the whole world to know about his brilliant, talented daughter.
Calliope considered his words for a moment. “If you treat me well, my brothers would probably be happy to,” she said thoughtfully. “As for my grandfather, you won’t be able to meet him, but I’m sure he would be overjoyed to know my birth parents have finally found me p>
She offered Jett a small smile. She had, in fact, visited her grandfather’s grave to tell him the news. If he was would
warching from above, he know everything. Perhaps it was his blessing that her birth parents were nothing like the Jewells; they seemed to be truly good people.
“Callie, thank you,” Mrs. White said, her eyes welling up. “Thank you for being alive,
and thank you for coming back to us. From now on, you are a princess with parents who will cherish you p>
“We know you’re strong and can get anything you want on your own,” Jett added, “but we hope you’ll give us a chance to give you the world p>
Calliope felt a warmth spread
through her chest. So this was what it felt like to be truly loved by your parents. They felt an immense debt to her and wanted nothing more than to make up for lost time to do everything they possibly can for her. It was a world away from the constant dissatisfaction, demands, and comparisons to an adopted child that she had known.
After some discussion, they decided to hold the party in Capitalton, since she was used to living there and most of her friends were local. Calliope wasn’t particularly concerned about a party, but Jett was insistent, so she agreed. It certainly couldn’t do her any harm.
Mrs. White even asked if she would mind if Blythe attended the party. If Calliope objected, they wouldn’t let Blythe come. If she was okay with it, they would allow her to be there but would make it clear to everyone that Blythe was only their adopted daughter.
Calliope didn’t mind, as long as
Blythe didn’t cause any trouble. And
if her new parents truly had her back then even if Blythe did act up,
it wouldn’t matter. In fact, it might be a good way to test them. At this point in her life, she was indifferent to whether she was officially part of her biological family or not.
