Zora had tried to thank Killian the other day, but he’d left before she got the chance. She’d looked everywhere for him, but he was already gone.

“It’s no big deal,” Killian said, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

“You should go enjoy your dinner. I’ll see you around p>

He noticed her glancing back toward her family’s group and spoke gently to let her go.

“Okay.” Zora’s mind was indeed on Opal and the others waiting for her.

Killian stood there, watching her walk away. He’d spent the past few days looking into Zora’s background.

She was 17, born on July 28th. She’d been switched with another baby at birth and grew up in Maplewood, raised solely by her mentor all her life. She’d been brought back to the city that May.

Life at Knox Villa had been terrible for her. Once she’d decided to leave, Jensen had taken her in at Marlow Manor. After a string of incidents, she was now living with Leighton at Aria Estates.

Killian’s gaze turned thoughtful.

He planned to go back and ask his uncle the exact time he was framed. He vaguely recalled it was 18 years ago, yet no one knew which month it was.

Just seeing Zora lifted his mood. Human intuition was strange like that. Some people just felt warm and familiar the second you laid eyes on them.

The whole family enjoyed a lively, pleasant dinner together.

By the time they finished eating, night had fully fallen, and the city’s lights were glowing brightly. As the group headed downstairs, Opal kept a tight hold on Zora’s hand.

It had been a wonderful day. Opal had drunk a little red wine, which made her more talkative than usual. Every word was filled with tenderness and pity for Zora.

She’d been through so much, and Opal’s heart ached for her.

“Always remember, I’ve got your back,” Opal said softly. “If anyone mistreats you, come tell me right away p>

“I will, Grandma.” Zora smiled brightly and nodded.

The group took the elevator down to the lobby. The second they stepped out, a sharp, shrill voice cut through the quiet.

“Let me in here p>

Everyone turned toward the sound.

Wendy was stumbling in her high heels, trying to force her way into the lobby. The security guards weren’t letting her through. She’d already caused a scene earlier that afternoon, and now she stood frozen at the entrance, glaring at them with resentment.

No one had expected her to still be hanging around. It was almost eight o’clock at night.

The weather had grown colder with the start of autumn. Wendy was only wearing a thin pink dress with her arms fully exposed, shivering nonstop in the wind. Her hair was a messy, and her eyes were bloodshot.

No one could tell if it was the cold or her endless troubles that had worn her out.

Her once full, glowing face was gaunt and sunken. She’d lost a drastic amount of weight and looked years older.

For a split second, even Opal couldn’t recognize her.

Back when she had the Marlow family’s support, Wendy’s life had been effortless. She’d never faced real hardship or stress. Even in her early fifties, she’d looked as youthful as someone in their thirties.

But in just over two weeks, she’d fallen apart.

She used to dress flawlessly for every occasion, but the weight of her troubles had broken her. She didn’t even bother fixing herself up anymore, wearing an old, outdated dress.

Everyone except Jensen and Zora was shocked to see her there.

“That’s my mom! Let me in! She’s right there!” Wendy screamed furiously at the guards.

Her old grace and soft demeanor were gone without a trace. Her voice was harsh and piercing, her gaze full of bitterness, like the whole world owed her something.

She’d been unbelievably fortunate. Adored and spoiled by the Marlows her whole adult life, Opal and Floyd had given her everything she’d ever wanted. Yet she’d never been satisfied.

When she noticed Opal staring at her, she screamed even louder, shoving violently at the guards blocking her path, her face twisted with rage and contempt.

“Sir…” A waiter walked over to Jensen awkwardly. “The lady outside has been causing a

drama

Wayne and Yale had both come looking for him multiple times lately, only to be turned away Now that those two had no luck, they had sent Wendy instead.

“Grandma?” Jensen didn’t make a call on his own. He deferred to Opal

“Let her come in.” Opal said, her tone heavy with mixed emotions as she looked at Wendy We’ll get everything out in the open and cut all ties once and for all

“Could you arrange a quiet private room for us?” Jensen asked the waiter.

“Of course. Right this way.” The waiter led them toward the private rooms.

“Zora, if you don’t want to face her, you can head home with Leighton first.’ Jensen said gently. glancing over at her.
