Chapter 822

Travis smelled like dust and resentment.

It was midnight. I found him in the basement, sitting on a stack of files, eating a protein bar.

“Done?” I asked.

“Halfway,” he groaned. “This is inhumane.”

“You know what’s inhumane?” I asked, leaning against a pillar. “Betrayal. Watching the world crumble while you play games.”

He froze mid-chew. “What?”

“My last assistant,” I said casually. “She sold me out. I ruined her life. She works at a gas station in Nevada now.”

Travis swallowed hard. “Cool story.”

“Just a cautionary tale.”

I walked over and kicked the box he was sitting on. “Get back to work. I need those blueprints for the old city grid found by dawn.”

He glared at me. Pure, unadulterated venom.

An hour later, I was in the security room.

“He’s moving,” Felix, our tech guy, said.

On the screen, Travis was in the garden. It was pitch-black. He walked along the perimeter wall, holding his phone up.

“He’s mapping the cameras,” Lucian said. “Look at the angle. He’s finding the blind spots.”

“Let him,” I said. “He thinks he’s finding a way in for his friends.”

“Is he?”

“No,” I said. “He’s finding the path I want them to take.”

Travis stopped by the rose bushes. He knelt and buried something in the dirt.

“Marker,” Alistair said. “Drop point.”

“Or a signal booster,” Lucian corrected. “He’s trying to bypass our firewall jamming.”

Travis stood, dusted off his knees, and looked back at the house. He smiled. It was a nasty, triumphant smirk.

He pulled out his phone again.

Message intercepted: The roses are in bloom. Tomorrow night.

“Tomorrow night,” I repeated. “The Phoenix’s Ascension.”

“It’s a gathering,” Alistair said, reading the decoded data stream Felix had just cracked. “At the Old Opera House. The remnants of the underworld are meeting to pledge allegiance to the new order.”

“Perfect,” I said. “A masquerade for the end of the world. How fitting.”

“Skye,” Alistair warned. “If they plan to hit us there…”

“We’ll be the ones wearing the real masks,” I said. “Lucian, switch the camera rotations in the garden at 0200 hours. Make his map useless.”

“Copy that.”
