The police captain marched toward Skye, handcuffs glinting in the chandelier light.
“Skye Sterling,” the captain said. “You are under arrest for attempted murder p>
“Wait,” Skye said. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it carried across the silent hall.
“Save it for the judge,” the captain said, reaching for her arm.
“I said wait!” Skye snapped.
She turned to the massive projection screen behind the stage, usually used for charity presentations. “Before you arrest me, Captain, you might want to watch the movie p>
“What movie?” Beatrice demanded.
“That one,” Skye said, pointing.
From the DJ booth on the balcony, Alistair stepped out. He held a tablet connected to the AV system. He looked furious, but focused.
He pressed a button.
The screen flickered.
A high-definition video feed appeared. It was a bird’s-eye view, taken from the venue’s own camera mounted in the chandelier, which Alistair had accessed.
The audio crackled over the speakers, loud and clear, enhanced from Skye’s brooch microphone and the relative quiet of the upper gallery.
Seraphina’s voice: “Dominic will kill my mother if I don’t do this. He has her. He said I have to accuse you p>
The crowd gasped. Dominic’s face went white.
Skye’s voice: “Then help me take him down. Don’t do this p>
Seraphina’s voice: “It’s too late p>
Then the scream.
“No, Skye! Don’t push me! Please! My baby p>
But the video showed the truth. It showed Skye pulling away, raising her hands high. It showed a clear three-foot gap between the women. It showed Seraphina, completely untouched, launching herself backward into the void.
The video ended on a freeze-frame of the gap between them.

Beatrice stared at the screen, her mouth open. She thought of the receipt she had found earlier and finally understood the depth of the deception.

The captain stopped. He looked at Dominic.
Dominic turned to run.
“Stop him,” Alistair’s voice boomed from the balcony.
Two of Alistair’s security team tackled Dominic before he reached the side exit. They slammed him against the wall.

“It’s real,” Skye said, walking over to him. “And so is the prison sentence for kidnapping Seraphina’s mother. We found her, Dominic. We tracked your location data from the safe house. My team extracted her from the casino basement twenty minutes ago. She’s safe p>
