We stepped into the executive elevator. I pressed the button for the top floor.
The numbers ticked up. Ten… twenty… thirty…
My heart was pounding, not with fear, but with anticipation.

The doors opened.
The sound of arguing drifted down the hall.

I walked into the conference room. The atmosphere was tense. Sienna stood at the head of the table, looking disheveled and frantic. She had tried to redecorate this room too, draping pink sashes over the chairs, but they looked like bandages on a wound. She looked like an intruder in a sanctuary.
I slammed the doors shut behind me.
The sound echoed like a gunshot.

Two security guards rushed in from the hallway.
They saw Alistair Thorne and froze instantly.
“Touch her,” Alistair said pleasantly, “and you lose your hands p>
The guards backed away, terrified. Their eyes dropped to the floor.
“This is my meeting!” Sienna insisted, puffing up her chest. “Liam put me in charge p>
“Is it?” I asked.
I walked to the table and picked up the stack of files Sienna had been waving around.
Then I walked to the trash can and dropped them in.

Sienna stared at the papers and refused to touch them. “They’re fake!” she shrieked. “You forged them p>
Alistair signaled to Felix.
The conference-room screen lowered automatically. The projector hummed to life.
“Since we have the whole board here,” Alistair began, his voice commanding the room, “let’s review Ms. Quinn’s conduct during her illegal occupation p>
The screen displayed financial records.
“Embezzlement,” Alistair read.
The screen changed. A series of invoices for luxury goods billed as “R&D expenses p>
“Fifty Hermès bags. A diamond collar for a dog you don’t own. A yacht rental in Monaco p>
