Dominic stood there, breathing heavily. He looked at Julian.
“You knew,” Dominic accused.
Julian coughed again, hiding a small smile behind his handkerchief. “I knew nothing. But… she is efficient, isn’t she p>
Outside, a fleet of luxury buses waited. Skye stood by the door of the lead bus, wearing sunglasses. As the trainees poured out of the building, cheering, she felt a surge of triumph.
Sebastian walked up to her and high-fived her. “Clean sweep p>
“Welcome to Oracle,” Skye said with a smile.
She looked up at the window of the conference room. She could see Dominic’s silhouette, smashing a vase against the wall.
Her phone buzzed. A text from Julian.
Pleasure doing business. You have your army. Now win the war.
Skye texted back:
Watch your back, Julian. You’re next.
Dominic, left alone in the wreckage of his office, picked up his phone. His hands were shaking with rage. He had lost his talent. He had lost his leverage.
He needed a weapon.
A nuclear option.
He dialed a number.
“Get the car,” Dominic snarled. “We’re going to see Seraphina p>
The safe house was a dingy apartment in the industrial district, a far cry from the luxury Seraphina felt she deserved. Dominic kicked the door open without knocking.
Seraphina was sitting on the sofa, eating a bowl of imported cherries she had billed to Dominic’s emergency card. She jumped as he entered, dropping the bowl. Cherries rolled across the stained carpet like drops of blood.

Dominic walked over and kicked the bowl aside. He grabbed her by the jaw, forcing her to look at him. His eyes were wild, filled with the desperation of a man losing his empire.
“You useless parasite,” he hissed.
“W-what did I do?” Seraphina stammered.

“Skye took everything,” Dominic said, his voice dangerously low. “She bought my talent. She humiliated me. And you… you’re just sitting here eating fruit p>
He shoved her back onto the sofa.
“I have a plan,” Seraphina cried. “The gala! The Kensington Jewelry Gala! I’m going to p>
“You are going to do exactly what I tell you,” Dominic interrupted.
He pulled a manila envelope from his jacket and threw it at her.
Seraphina opened it. Her hands shook as she pulled out the photos.
They were pictures of her mother. Her real mother. Not the fake socialite backstory Seraphina had invented. Her mother was in a basement casino, surrounded by rough-looking men. In one photo, a man held a gun to her mother’s head.
Seraphina screamed, dropping the photos. “No! Leave her alone p>
“She has a lot of debt, your mother,” Dominic said coldly. “Liam Kensington may have cut her loose to live in poverty after he exposed you, but she didn’t learn her lesson. She went right back to the tables. I bought her debt from the loan sharks this morning, Seraphina. I own her life p>
“Please,” Seraphina begged, falling to her knees. “I’ll do anything p>
“Good,” Dominic said.
He leaned down, his face inches from hers. “Tonight at the gala, you are going to accuse Skye of pushing you p>
“Accuse her?” Seraphina blinked.
