Chapter 831

The Wolf’s heavy footsteps faded down the hallway, swallowed by the rising cacophony of the hotel under siege.

I waited a full minute. Then another. My heart pounded a frantic rhythm against my ribs, but I forced my breathing to slow.

In. Out.

“Is he gone?” Victoria’s voice trembled from under the bed, barely a whisper.

“No,” I whispered back, pushing the closet door open. “He’s distracted. But he’ll be back, or someone else will. We need to move.”

I looked around the closet. Hanging in the back, wrapped in plastic, was a spare uniform: a black vest and trousers, standard for the night cleaning crew.

“Put this on,” I said, tossing the bundle toward the bed.

“What about you?”

I grabbed a gray maintenance jumpsuit from the hook on the door. It was three sizes too big, stained with oil. “I’m the janitor.”

Three minutes later, we pushed a housekeeping cart out into the hallway. Victoria kept her head down, clutching a spray bottle like a weapon. I pushed the cart, my hair tucked under a cap I’d found.

We made it to the service elevator. The doors slid open.

A figure stood there.

He wore a tuxedo, ripped at the shoulder. And a mask. Not a wolf. A simple white porcelain mask that covered the upper half of his face.

I lunged, the knife sliding from my sleeve into my palm.

“Whoa!” The man caught my wrist. His grip was iron, but his touch… it didn’t feel like an enemy’s.

“Easy, Skye. It’s me.”

The voice was rough, disguised, but the cadence was familiar. It sent a jolt of recognition straight to my spine.

He lifted the mask slightly.

Gray eyes. Intense. Cold, yet burning with something that looked like desperation. And a flicker of the man who had stood beside Alistair just days ago as his best man.

“Liam?” I breathed, my knife lowering but not dropping.

“Keep your voice down,” he said, scanning the hallway behind us. “Alistair sent me. I’m your extraction.”

“Alistair is outside,” I said, my mind racing. Liam was supposed to be safe, away from this madness. Why was he here? “Why are you inside?”

“Because he knew you wouldn’t wait for the cavalry,” Liam said. He glanced at Victoria. “And you picked up a stray.”

“She’s not a stray,” I snapped. “She’s my responsibility.”

“Whatever. We need to move. Bianca is in the penthouse. She has the master key for the jamming signal.”

“How do you know that?”

“Because I know how people like her think,” Liam said darkly.

He turned and hit the button for the penthouse.
