“I love Alistair,” Skye repeated, her voice steady and clear. “I love him, Liam. In a way I never loved you. Because he sees me. He doesn’t see an accessory. He doesn’t see a trophy. He sees me p>
Liam took a step back, hit the wall, and slid down it slightly.
“You… you can’t. He’s a thug p>
“He’s a man who listens,” Skye said.
She walked to her bag and pulled out a document. It was a revised divorce settlement that gave her nothing but her freedom.
“Sign the papers,” she said. “Let me go. For real this time p>
Liam looked at the papers. Tears welled in his eyes and spilled over his cheeks.
“I won’t let you go to him,” he choked out. “I can’t p>
Skye set the papers on the vanity. “I was never yours to keep p>
She walked past him. At the door, she paused.
“Victoria Hayes hired Crystal,” she said. “If you really want to help me, Liam, stay out of my way while I destroy her p>
She left him alone in the room, sobbing quietly.
Outside, the air was cool. A black sedan was waiting. The window rolled down. Alistair sat inside, his face grim.
Skye got in. Alistair immediately pulled her into his arms, checking the bandage on her neck. His eyes were dark with a terrifying rage.
“I’m going to kill her,” Alistair growled. “Victoria. I’m going to tear her apart p>
“Not yet,” Skye said, resting her head on his shoulder. “We do this legally first. Then we destroy her socially p>
“Where to?” the driver asked.
“The studio holding room,” Skye said. “I spoke to the captain. He’s giving me five minutes with Crystal before they transport her to the precinct p>
An hour later, in the makeshift interrogation room at the studio, Crystal sat at the metal table, handcuffed, looking small and terrified. The brave facade was gone. She was just a girl who had made a terrible mistake.
Skye walked in and placed a cup of coffee on the table.

“Victoria isn’t coming,” Skye said simply. “Her lawyers blocked your calls. She claims she doesn’t know you p>
Crystal put her head in her hands and wept.
“She promised,” Crystal sobbed. “She said she’d get me a lawyer. She said I’d just get probation p>
“She lied,” Skye said.
She sat down opposite Crystal. “But I can help you p>
Crystal looked up, snot running down her nose. “Why would you help me? I tried to cut you p>
“Because you’re a pawn,” Skye said. “And I want the Queen p>
Skye leaned forward. “I saw the message on your phone, Crystal. The lock screen notification. Unlock the phone. Give me the chat logs. Give me the recording of her instructions p>
“If I do that… will you help me p>
“I’ll ask the judge for leniency. I’ll get you into a mental health facility instead of prison p>
Crystal hesitated. Then, with shaking hands, she nodded toward the phone sitting inside an evidence bag on the table.
“The code is 1998,” Crystal whispered. “It’s all in there. She sent voice notes p>
Skye nodded to the officer standing by the door.
“Smart girl,” Skye said.
She walked out of the room.
