When they arrived at the Lancaster estate, the staff lined up to welcome her back. The dining room table groaned under the weight of a massive feast, entirely made up of Serena’s favorites. Everyone constantly piled food onto her plate until it looked like a small mountain.
Serena ate quietly, soaking in the warm atmosphere. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the spot
where Agnes used to stand, catering to Isabella. Now, a new maid stood there. Since returning, she hadn’t seen Isabetta, nor had anyone mentioned her or Agnes. It was as if they had been erased from existence.
Serena took a slow sip of her soup. She knew her family’s temperament. Once a line was crossed, they were ruthless. They had cleansed the house of the traitors, and that was that. Good riddance.
During the meal, the family repeatedly thanked Nicholas for dropping his business in Elyndor to accompany Serena. They had heard from Silas just how devoted Nicholas had been. While they were stiffa bit territorial over Serena, they silently agreed that if anyone was worthy of her, it was him.
