Anneliese had caused two major scenes in a single night, humiliating the White family utterly. She should never have been allowed back tonight.
Inside the villa, Jonathan carried Anneliese, the warmth from the heater washing over them.
His cold, calculating gaze swept over the maids before he commanded one to lead them to Anneliese’s room.
The maid, trembling in fear, hurried ahead and stopped before a door tucked in the farthest corner of the first floor.
“This is Ms. Claude’s room…” she stammered.
When she pushed the door open, shelves lined with airplane models greeted them.
The maid froze, aware of Jonathan’s icy, furious stare burning into her. “T–This is really Ms. Claude’s room. It’s just… been renovated,” she muttered.
Jonathan had long known Anneliese’s family neglected her, but tonight, he truly saw the depth of their disregard and mistreatment. They were like a pack of jackals.
“Take us to the guest room,” he said, his voice low and menacing.
The maid nodded frantically and scurried upstairs.
When Jonathan finally carried Anneliese into the guest room’s bathroom and unwrapped her from the blanket, she was still trembling, cold as ice, curling into herself.
There wasn’t time to fill the bathtub, so Jonathan turned on the hot shower and stepped under it with her in his arms, letting the warm water cascade over them.
Anneliese clung to his neck, tilting her head to look up at him. Her eyes were red and glistening, her expression soft and vulnerable.
Steam from the hot water rose around them, blurring the edges of the room, yet she didn’t avert her gaze.
She kept staring at him, as if afraid he might vanish if she looked away.

For a fleeting moment, seeing him swim toward her earlier stirred a strange memory–one of the person who had saved her from drowning as a child. The images overlapped for a heartbeat, though she knew it couldn’t be him.
Back then, in the hospital, Zacharias had been by her bedside, hair still wet. He had saved her.
She tried to shake the thought, but her eyes remained fixed on Jonathan.
Sensing her unease, he adjusted his hold, rotating his arms to cradle her hips in a new hold. Sliding his arms beneath her knees from both sides, he lifted her like a baby, pressing her chest firmly against his as he stepped back slightly.
The hot water cascaded over the back of her neck and shoulders. He lowered his gaze to her, his voice soft and gentle, mingling with the rising steam–ethereal, low, and magnetic as it brushed against Anneliese’s ears.
“Are you scared?” Jonathan asked.
Anneliese felt a surge of terror. She had overestimated herself.
She’d only ever practiced swimming in shallow water, with goggles and a nose clip, managing a lap or two under perfect conditions.
Thrown into deep water from a height, barely able to see–this was entirely different.
She hadn’t even begun swimming before panic set in; she choked, cramped, and flailed before sinking.
The childhood fear of drowning rushed back. If Jonathan hadn’t reached her in time, she didn’t want to imagine what might have happened.
Even now, she trembled, weak and shaken, overwhelmed by fear.
She kept her gaze locked on him, lips pale and pressed together, silent.
Jonathan let out a sharp, exasperated snort and abruptly withdrew his hand from beneath her right knee. “Serves you right,” he muttered.
His deep voice resonated just as a sudden smack echoed through the bathroom.
The unexpected impact made Anneliese cry out, her legs instinctively clamping around his slender waist.
Before she could react, his now–free hand landed firmly on her backside.
