Anneliese thought, God … Why am I lying in bed at midnight having this conversation?
As they chatted longer, it became tougher to unwind.
Warmth spread through her, her toes curling beneath the covers as shame blurred into something dangerously close to desire. She peeked out from under the covers, her cheeks flushing, her lungs gasping for air.
Another message popped up. Jessica, clearly seeing right through her silence, doubled down.

Anneliese’s face burned even hotter.
Morning came too soon, and once again she overslept. When she finally left her room, the clock was already creeping toward 9 a.m.
She figured Jonathan had already gone for work, but instead found him lounging on the couch with his laptop on his lap, casually browsing through documents.
He looked up as her door opened.
Anneliese froze. Oh no. My hair’s a wreck, my face is bare, and– oh God–what if I still have sleep crust in my eyes?
She swiftly darted back in and slammed the door as if escaping a crime scene.
