Jonathan, who had been suffering his nattering, noticed that Anneliese was wide awake and staring at him with startled eyes. So, he immediately turned around and shot Carter a warning look.

Carter’s jaws promptly closed with a click. However, he quickly recovered and had a retort on the tip of his tongue when Jonathan strode over the bed, completely dismissing him.
The frosty look in his eyes was nowhere to be seen. In fact, he sounded warm as he asked gently, “You’re up? Are you still feeling sick p>
Anneliese nodded before shaking her head as she replied, “The fever’s gone. I feel totally fine

Carter trudged over with his arms crossed as he rolled his eyes at Jonathan in exasperation. “I told you so p>
Carter’s judgmental words rolled off Jonathan like water off a duck’s back as he handed Anneliese a glass of water from the nightstand.
Then, he introduced the two, saying, “This is Carter Chevalier. He’s my private doctor. He’s as dumb as he is competent, and he loves to run his mouth, so don’t take his words to heart p>
Carter sneered at him, but said nothing.
Frankly, he wouldn’t mind lobotomizing Jonathan just so he could finally understand what made him such an *sshole.
“Thank you, Dr. Chevalier. I’m so sorry for the inconvenience. I’m completely okay, so please go home and rest p>

Carter rolled his eyes as he straightened his collar, saying, “Her heart is fine and her airways are clear. Her fever’s gone down, and there are no signs of dry drowning. Trust me. She’s in way better condition than I am at the moment p>
He’d been slaving away for nearly 24 hours. He wasn’t kidding when he said he’d die from exhaustion p>

Jonathan nodded upon hearing his diagnosis.
With that done, Carter immediately shot him a look that said, “You owe me one,” before leaving with a yawn.
Meanwhile, Anneliese took a couple of sips of water, ignoring the play–by–play.

She paused. Now that she thought about it, she probably wouldn’t even realize that she was starving if he hadn’t brought it up.
She’d completely forgotten that she said no to dinner just so she could look good in her dress during the banquet.
Plus, she had wasted way more energy than she thought she would because of that wretched affair.
So, she nodded. Jonathan promptly called Zion, ordering him to bring in the food that had been kept warm just for her sake.
Anneliese pursed her lips, waiting for him to end the call. Once he did, she took the opportunity to ask him, “Did you really go to the banquet tonight for my sake p>

She couldn’t deny that it felt amazing when Jonathan announced to all the guests in attendance that he was there for her. He’d put Selina in her place in one fell swoop, and it had been exhilarating.

Something unreadable flickered in his gaze before he said, “Miss White did invite me to the banquet. However, I only accepted the invitation because my mother insisted that I attend the banquet.
I barely know the woman as it is, while you’re the one I’m friends with. Naturally, I stepped up to help a friend.
Why do you ask, Anne? Do I look like the kind of person who can’t differentiate right from wrong? Or do I also look like a guy who would just stand idly by when my friends are getting bullied p>
He narrowed his eyes toward the end of his response, staring at her with a slightly annoyed look on his face.
