Jonathan said nothing, eyes closed as he leaned back to rest. The only sound left in the car was Meatloaf panting excitedly the entire ride.
The man sat with his long legs crossed, and Meatloaf had been shamelessly rubbing up against his shoes the whole way.
Every now and then, Jonathan would nudge the dog’s head with the tip of his shoe, and
Meatloaf would respond by wiggling its butt enthusiastically. At this point, Anneliese genuinely couldn’t tell whose dog it actually was.
“Why is her phone suddenly unreachable p>
Zacharias had already gotten his head wound treated in the ER. His expression was cold and tense. After several failed attempts to reach her, a deep frown creased his brows.
“Mr. Shaw,” Jackie asked cautiously, “could Madam’s phone be turned off p>
“It keeps saying the line’s busy! What the hell is going on p>
Zacharias tried calling again. Who has Anneliese been on the phone with all this time?
But who else could she possibly call? The Whites don’t care about her, and other than Jessica, she doesn’t have anyone. And it’s not like she could be on the phone with Jessica this long
“If the line’s been busy all this time… maybe Madam blocked your number?” Jackie offered tentatively,
Zacharias stared at him like he’d just cracked a bad joke, then let out a laugh. “Seriously? That’s your idea of a joke now, Jackie p>
The assistant fell silent.
“Probably just bad reception. Go check if she went home yet,” Zacharias ordered.

If she’s not home, then she’s with Jessica. Anneliese, don’t think running off means you’ve escaped.
City lights streaked by as the Bentley approached Riverview Court. Anneliese had already messaged Jessica ahead of time.
She leaned forward and pointed out the window toward Jessica, who was standing by the road. “That’s my friend. Just pull over there p>
Zion slowed the car, and Anneliese turned to Jonathan. “Thanks so much for today, Mr. Fullbuster p>
Jonathan finally opened his eyes and gave her a dignified nod. “Meatloaf and I got along well p>
Translation: If it weren’t for the dog, he wouldn’t have bothered letting her in his car.
So that’s what it was. Anneliese felt a wave of relief and silently scolded herself. Anneliese, you narcissist. Get a grip.
“You clearly love dogs, Mr. Fullbuster. You must be a good guy. Well, goodbye.” She opened the door and got out, dragging Meatloaf away from where it was still trying to snuggle up to Jonathan’s foot.
Zion couldn’t help but burst into laughter at her “good guy” remark.
Jonathan turned to him, gaze cool and sharp. Zion fought back the urge to laugh harder. “Mr. Fullbuster, I also think you’re a great boss. And definitely a good guy p>
A good guy … with the face of a cold, domineering CEO out of a soap opera.
Jonathan stared at his overly bold assistant and nodded. “Take your calcium supplements. Don’t let your joints go bad while you’re still young p>
Zion had no words. God knows, I meant that as a compliment!
“What happened to you? You look like you’ve been through hell. And who was that who dropped you off? I swear I saw a man!” Jessica helped the limping Anneliese while holding onto Meatloaf, her concerned expression turning gossipy as her eyes chased the departing Bentley.
Anneliese gave her a quick pinch. “Stop staring. He’s got a daughter old enough to have opinions. Just some stranger I happened to meet–kind enough to give me a lift p>

The moment she heard about the daughter, Jessica immediately lost all interest in the juicy possibilities.
She had been fantasizing about some jaw–dropping hunk–someone way better than Sh*tShaw -who’d sweep Annie off her feet and launch her into her own happily–ever–after.
Back at the apartment, the two women and one dog settled in as Anneliese gave Jessica a quick rundown of everything that had happened that night.
“That witch Melody Zwick! If you hadn’t helped their family out back then, they’d be living on the streets by now! And that d*mn Lenora–why the hell did you even bother with her? Let her run off with that thug and pop out seven or eight kids. She’d love that! A whole family of ungrateful leeches p>
Lenora had actually been close with Anneliese when they were younger. Back in high school, Lenora had dated an older guy from outside the school, and Anneliese discovered he was nothing but a thug with a string of exes–each one had gotten pregnant and had abortions for him.
She’d told Zacharias, and he’d locked Lenora in the house for days until she agreed to break up. Since then, Lenora had hated Anneliese, and for the past couple of years, she’d done everything she could to make her life hell.
Jessica was so mad that she started shaking. And right then, Zacharias had the gall to call her phone.
“Don’t answer. I already blocked him,” Anneliese said coldly.
Jessica hung up, but Zacharias just kept calling again. And again. Relentless.
