The line went dead just as a knock sounded at his office door.
Before he could respond, Zion entered, holding a thick file of documents. Jonathan raised an eyebrow, and Zion swiftly moved across the room to set the folder on his desk.
“Mr. Fullbuster,” he reported quickly, “we finally found something on the couple suspected of taking Mrs. Fullbuster from Mikita all those years ago. Hmm… you’d better see this yourself p>
Jonathan flipped open the file, scanning through the first few pages. Two glossy photos slipped free and slid across the desk. He picked them up.
The pictures showed an older couple and a young woman, all dressed in matching windbreakers, smiling against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. The kind of photo ordinary families took on a weekend hike-warm, simple, happy.
Zion cleared his throat. “We can’t confirm for sure that this is the same couple, but everything points their way. The young woman in the photo is Sylvia Pollard, and here’s where it gets unusual-she shares the same birthday as Selina White.
“The story goes that after visiting Oceaton for infertility treatment, the couple returned with a baby girl, claiming they found her and legally adopted her shortly thereafter p>

“Right here.” Zion swiped through his phone until he found photos of Timothy and Melanie, then handed it over.
Jonathan compared the photos side by side-the girl from the mountain photo and the Whites.
Zion came around the desk, leaning in to get a better look. His eyes widened. “D*mn. That girl looks more like Melanie Lawrence than Mrs. Fullbuster does. You don’t think… they got the wrong kid, do you p>
Jonathan’s face was unreadable, though his silence was heavier than words. He slid the photos and documents back across the table. “Where is she now? Verify her connection to the Whites p>
“She’s currently studying in Madfell,” Zion replied. “Should we loop Mrs. Fullbuster in? Another DNA test with her and the Whites would clear this up a lot faster p>
Jonathan leaned back in his chair, his jaw tightening. He thought about how many years Anneliese had suffered under the Whites! roof-how they’d made her feel like an outsider in her own home.
“Don’t tell her,” he spoke quietly. “Not yet. Confirm everything first. When it’s certain, I’ll tell her myself p>
He looked down at the photo again, at that smiling girl who might’ve been living the life Anneliese was meant to have.
Perhaps… not being White isn’t a tragedy after all. Maybe it’s finally her chance to be free.

adoptive father rescued from the fire years ago—and that her marriage to him was deliberate, possibly driven by a secret motive.
