Zacharias ground his teeth in fury, his other hand curling into a fist that he swung at Jonathan’s face.
Jonathan tilted his head, dodging with ease. In the same motion, he twisted Zacharias‘ arm behind his back and drove his elbow hard into the man’s spine. Zacharias staggered and crashed out through the front door.
Jonathan followed him out, shutting the door behind with a sharp pull.

He lunged at Jonathan again, seething with hatred,

The handsome features hardened, his entire presence sharp and predatory. He moved like a panther, swift and merciless.
Heavy thuds echoed down the hallway–flesh meeting fist, blow after blow. Zacharias had never been Jonathan’s equal, and drunk as he was, he stood no chance.

It was a beating, plain and simple. Jonathan avoided his head and face, landing strikes only where the pain would cut deep but leave little to show.
When he finally let go, Zacharias collapsed to the floor, limp as wet clay, unable to move, let alone fight.
Jonathan grabbed him by the collar and hauled him upright.

Jonathan placed his hand on the lock, waited for the fingerprint scan to clear, then opened the door at an unhurried pace. He stepped inside, glanced back once, and closed the door.
Every movement was deliberate, steady–an understated display of power. There was no sign that only an hour earlier, he had finally been granted the right to enter freely.
The hallway fell into silence. Zacharias, drenched in cold sweat, slumped against the wall and stared at the shut door.
When the sensor light flicked off, something warmer than sweat slid down from the corner of his eye.
Inside, Anneliese heard the door open and close. She rushed out of the bedroom at once.

She looked at the man walking toward her.
For a fleeting second, Jonathan considered pretending he was hurt, just to win her sympathy. But the thought vanished as quickly as it came.
