Her hips touched only the edge of his. Anneliese frowned, twisting against him to try again, but he turned away once more.
Her stubbornness flared hot. She clung tighter, writhing against him as if she could force the kiss no matter what.
Her strength broke. Her grip failed. Her body slipped.
“Ah!” she cried, bracing for the fall that would slam her to the ground.
At the last second, Jonathan’s hands closed around her arms.
His grip saved her, but he let her slide free from his body all the same.
Humiliation burned through her chest.

She tore herself free and spun around. She stormed to the balcony door and pulled with all her strength.
The glass didn’t move. Her eyes blurred with tears. She yanked harder, but it stayed locked in place. Only then did she look up and see his hand braced above her head, pressing the frame down.

She lashed out with her foot, striking his shin, and lifted her chin.
