Chapter 24
I felt my willpower weaken as his rough thumb ran over my bottom lip. My body responded to his touch. My tongue slipped out of my mouth, slowly sliding over that thumb.
Just when I thought something else was about to happen, his eyes clouded over. I cursed this stupid mind link. My body screamed for him. He had lit a fire in me that only he could put out.
Every time Kane touched me, all thoughts of my virginity evaporated. I knew that sooner or later, he would steal my virginity. My body refused to give it to anyone else.
As soon as the fog cleared from Kane’s eyes, he removed his hand from my face and took a few steps back. My chest rose and fell heavily, and the desire still burned in his eyes.
“This is the last time you challenge me, Zara.” Alpha Kane’s voice was low and husky as he turned away from me.
“Don’t count on it.” My words came out breathlessly, but the fire that fueled my defiance still burned.
Alpha Kane froze in place. “I’ll contact you as soon as I can come up with a suitable punishment for your attack on Cassie. I’m in a hurry right now, I don’t have time, I have to go to the meeting, so you’ll be on your best behavior around humans. Consider this my warning.” Without another word, Alpha Kane turned and ran back to the office.
The ice cube I held for my CEO was in a rather foul mood. Not that he was always in a good mood, but this day had been exceptional.
Alpha Kane’s obsidian eyes were especially cloudy today, all emotion gone, replaced by a bottomless darkness as he looked at me.
It was unsettling, but it calmed my heartbeat.
“We have a meeting with all the department heads this afternoon. You’ll be joining me and taking notes. Get a black tie before we go,” Alpha Kane snapped, opening a drawer and pulling out what looked like a cigarette case. His brow was furrowed like angry dunes.
“Yes, sir! Anything else?” I asked, jotting down his thoughts on my iPad.
“Nothing,” Alpha Kane grumbled, pulling out a cigarette and clutching it in his long fingers.
“Check your email for details of the meeting.” Alpha Kane pointed at my iPad with his cigarette-covered fingers and stuck a long, cancer-causing stick into his mouth.
Pressing his lips together to hold it in place, Alpha Kane grabbed a Zippo lighter with his other hand, flipped it open, and held the yellow-blue flame to the tip.
The cigarette hissed, and he blew out a cloud of smoke.
“Great, the guy wanted to die of lung cancer,” Nova agreed.
“And Alpha Kane couldn’t wait for me to leave his office so he could light up that deadly nicotine stick?” I rolled my eyes at Nova.
“I’ll deal with them.” I paused, waiting for further instructions, but Alpha Kane seemed to be drowning in the melancholy smoke emanating from his cigarette.
“Dismissed,” Alpha Kane groaned, not looking at me.
“Did I say something to make him angry p>
“Nothing.” Nova sympathized.
“What’s his problem?” Nova muttered.
“Alpha is still mad about you hitting Cassie?” Nova gave her opinion.
“I don’t think Alpha should bring that anger into the office,” I smirked.
With one last questioning glance at Alpha Kane, I left his office.
Entering the office, I closed the door and sat down in the chair to read the email Alpha Kane had sent me.
My heart was pounding in my chest as I opened it and began to read.
For this trick to work, I needed to memorize them before the meeting.
I fixed my makeup, hair, and clothes. Time to go with him and see how Alpha Kane interacts with humans.
All the preparations for the meeting were complete. The heads of all departments of the company were supposed to meet and present their monthly report to the CEO.
Miranda and I ordered drinks and coffee for everyone except Alpha Kane. I made Alpha Kane’s coffee and brought him sugar-free flaxseed cookies from his favorite keto store.
“They were bland and unappetizing to look at, and I wondered how Alpha Kane could even eat that crap.” I rolled my eyes.
“But they sure were good for me, and I tried to bite off a piece and chew while I set his plate.” I offered mine.
“They felt like dry sand in my mouth, so I had to swallow them with water,” Nova commented.
“No… I’d stick with the chocolate chip mint cookies.” Nova was amused.
My wolf had her eye on the chocolate chip cookies.
I was a sucker for sweets.
Everything was in place, and Alpha Kane had arrived first while I was setting up the projector.
Of course, the asshole was timing things to the microsecond. Everyone would be in trouble. That thought was no comfort.
The door opened, and Alpha Kane slid forward like the devil in a suit. His gaze met mine, and then slid down to my buttoned cream blouse.
Alarmed and confused, I wondered what Alpha was looking at.
Alpha Kane stepped forward, his right hand in his pocket, and asked almost humbly.

Oh no, I must have dropped a crumb on my shirt, and his camera-like eyes, like bastards with high-definition micro vision, didn’t miss it.
I was so damn unlucky.
My ears were burning, but I wasn’t about to admit that I’d tried to eat one of his stupid, tasteless cookies.
