Chapter 479:
A piercing ringing filled her ears. Her pupils contracted. The grief of her miscarriage, the humiliation of every betrayal, and the despair crashing over her in that moment fused into a single, unbearable wave. Her sanity buckled under the weight of it.
An inhuman scream tore from her throat.
She seized a sharp silver boning knife from the table and drove it into the mahogany surface, splintering the wood. Then she swept her arm in a wide, violent arc, sending crystal glasses and bone china exploding across the floor. Martha screamed and stumbled backward. Richard lurched forward to stop her, but June slashed his robe, drawing blood across his forearm. She ignored his cries. She grabbed the boiling stew pot with both hands and hurled it at Martha — scalding broth splashed across her ankles, pulling another shriek from her throat.
June stood in the center of the wreckage, knife in hand, chest heaving, tears streaming silently down her face.
Behind a pillar at the far end of the room, the butler pressed himself against the wall, his hands trembling as he fumbled with his phone — dialing the police, and then Cole.
The air inside the dining room was thick and suffocating, heavy with the smell of burnt meat, spilled wine, and fresh blood.
June knelt in the center of the destruction. Her knees rested on shattered porcelain. Her hands hung limply at her sides. She stared at the floor, her mind completely detached from her body.
The heavy front doors of the mansion burst open again.
Rapid, heavy footsteps pounded across the marble foyer.

Cole stormed into the dining room, bringing a wave of freezing, terrifying energy with him. He was wearing a dark suit, collar open, tie gone.
Alycia was right behind him. She had been staging a hysterical scene in the Compton Group lobby when Cole received a high-priority security alert — a ping from the hidden tracker he had placed on June’s car. Alycia had seen the address on his screen and, feigning terror for her parents, had thrown herself in front of his SUV until he allowed her to come along. She had fully intended to play the victim and watch June get arrested.
Cole stopped dead in his tracks.
His eyes swept the apocalyptic scene. He saw Richard clutching a bleeding arm. He saw Susan writhing on the floor, screaming about her burned ankles.
Alycia let out a dramatic, piercing shriek. She ran across the room and dropped to her knees beside her mother.
“Mom! Oh my God, what did she do to you?!” she cried, turning her tear-filled eyes up toward Cole. “Look at what she did! She is a monster! Call the police p>
Cole did not look at Alycia. He did not look at Susan. He did not look at Richard.
His eyes were locked entirely on June.
His heart slammed against his ribs with a violent, sickening force. He saw the absolute emptiness in her eyes. He saw the way her body was shaking.
June lifted her head slowly and looked at him.
A broken, terrifyingly hollow smile pulled at the corners of her mouth — the smile of a woman who had nothing left to lose.
