Chapter 303:
Then a sharp, rhythmic sound broke the suffocating silence of the hallway.
Click. Click. Click.
The sound of expensive high heels striking polished marble.
Cole forced his stiff neck to turn.

Walking down the bright end of the corridor was Alycia Beasley. She wore a perfectly tailored dress and a pair of limited-edition designer heels. In her arms she carried a heavy crystal vase with a thick, solid base, packed with imported white lilies โ and buried deep within the delicate petals, a micro-recording device intended to capture Crawfordโs dying breaths or Juneโs complete breakdown. Her face was arranged into a mask of deep, artificial concern, but her eyes darted rapidly through the hallway, hunting for her prey.
A violent surge of nausea hit the back of Coleโs throat.
He took a slow, silent step backward, pressing his massive frame deeper into the dark alcove near the vending machines. The shadows wrapped around him, a welcome shroud for his spiraling rage. He had absolutely no capacity to deal with her toxic presence right now.
Alycia was too focused on the brightly lit stage of the ICU room ahead to look toward the shadows. She walked straight past his hiding spot.
She stopped directly in front of the large observation window.
Inside the room, June was still leaning over the bed. But the sharp click of heels stopping just outside the glass caught her attention. She slowly lowered Crawfordโs hand and placed it gently on the white hospital blanket. Then she turned and looked through the glass.
The moment June saw Alycia standing there, every trace of raw, devastating emotion on her face vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced by a sheet of absolute, freezing ice.
June turned away from Crawford and walked to the heavy door. She pushed it open and stepped out into the hallway without letting it close completely behind her. She stood perfectly still, her body blocking the entrance.
โJune! Oh my God, I came as soon as I heard,โ Alycia said.
Her voice was loud enough to echo harshly off the sterile hospital walls. She thrust the heavy crystal vase forward slightly, the water inside sloshing against the glass.
โI heard Crawford got into a terrible car crash,โ Alycia continued, her face twisting into a practiced pout. โI brought this for him. I just had to come and see how he was doing p>
June looked at the ridiculous arrangement of lilies. Then she looked at Alyciaโs face.
Her eyes were completely dead โ no anger, no contempt. Only the flat, cold disgust reserved for something irredeemably beneath notice.
โThis is an intensive care unit,โ June said, her voice carrying no emotional inflection whatsoever. โIt is not a social club. Take your garbage and get out of here p>
Alyciaโs practiced smile twitched. The muscles around her mouth tightened as the dismissal landed.
She lowered the vase. The mask of sweet concern melted away, revealing the vicious truth beneath. She took a step closer to June and dropped her voice to a venomous, hissing whisper.
