The heavy wood missed his face by a fraction. The rush of displaced air hit him like a physical blow.
Cole stood in the empty hallway, staring at the locked door. A guttural sound rose from his chest. He raised his shoe and drove it into the concrete wall. The impact sent a shockwave of pain up his leg and did nothing at all for the devastation in his chest.
Inside the apartment, June slid the deadbolt into place with a quiet, final click. Her heart rate was perfectly steady. She turned off the lights and went to bed.
At ten o’clock the following morning, the atmosphere inside the top-floor executive suite of the Compton Group felt heavy enough to crush bone.
Cole sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his face a mask of dark, exhausted rage. His eyes were fixed on a small brown courier box sitting at the center of the desk.

The expensive tube of Swiss burn ointment rolled out onto the polished wood. Behind it fluttered a crisp white sheet of paper — a personal check, made out for exactly one hundred dollars, June’s sharp, elegant signature slashed across the bottom line.

The image of June wiping his touch from her wrist — over and over, as though removing something toxic — detonated behind his eyes. The pure, undisguised disgust in her expression burned into him like acid.
He grabbed the heavy custom crystal ashtray from the edge of his desk and hurled it at the floor-to-ceiling glass wall across the room.

The reinforced glass held. The crystal exploded into a thousand fragments, shards scattering across the carpet like shrapnel.
The secretary let out a terrified cry and stumbled backward.
“Get out!” Cole’s voice tore through his throat.
She didn’t wait. She turned and fled, the door slamming behind her.
A few seconds later, it opened again. Davis, the Compton Group’s chief legal counsel, walked in, a thick bound folder pressed to his chest. He paused, surveyed the glittering debris across the floor, stepped carefully around it, and approached the desk.
