Chapter 19
Chapter 19:
He pressed the accelerator.
“There’s a patrol car five minutes back. They’ll pick her up p>
The Rover surged forward. The tires hit a deep puddle and sent a wave of cold, filthy mud sweeping through the air.
It drenched June from head to foot.
She stood there, motionless, watching the red taillights dissolve into the storm.
He left her. He actually drove away and left her.
June did not cry. The rain washed the mud from her face. She started walking again. One foot in front of the other. Left. Right. Survive.
Thirty minutes later, the iron gates of the manor rose out of the darkness.

June pressed them open and stumbled up the driveway. The front door swung wide. A maid shrieked.
Grandmother Compton stood in the foyer, leaning on her cane, already in the middle of scolding Cole.
“You are late! And where is June? You told me she was coming p>
“She’s playing games, Grandmother,” Cole said, reaching for the decanter. “She’s probably p>
The door flew open.
June stood in the frame. She was shaking so violently her teeth chattered. Her skin had gone blue-white. Mud dripped from her hair and landed in slow, dark drops on the marble floor.
“June!” Grandmother gasped. She turned on Cole and brought her cane down hard against his shin. The crack of it rang through the foyer.
“You animal! You drove right past her p>
Cole dropped his glass. He stared. He had assumed she had a car. He had told himself it was an act.
No one could act this. She looked like death.
“I…” Cole took a step forward. “June p>
June looked at him. Her eyes were glassy and unfocused.
“I’m here,” she whispered. “I came — for my things p>
Her eyes rolled back. Her knees gave way.
She crumpled.
Cole moved before the thought could form. He lunged forward and caught her an instant before her head struck the floor. She was ice cold. And she was so light — terrifyingly, heartbreakingly light.
“Call the doctor!” Cole roared at the maid.
He gathered June into his arms. Her head fell against his chest.
“Don’t you dare die,” he growled, panic closing around his throat like a fist. “You don’t get to die on me p>
He ran for the stairs. From the shadows of the hallway, Alycia watched — her face twisting into something ugly and unguarded — as Cole carried his ex-wife up the staircase as though she were the most precious thing in the world.
The fever broke at dawn.
June woke in the guest room. The sheets were high-thread-count Egyptian cotton, smelling faintly of lavender. She felt sticky and worn through. She sat up, waited for the room to stop spinning, and forced herself to her feet. She needed to wash the mud — and everything else — off her skin.
She staggered into the en-suite bathroom, stripped off the ruined clothes, and stepped into the shower. The hot water stung. It also felt like absolution.
