Cole stopped ten feet away. A safe distance. The umbrella cast a dark shadow across his face, leaving only his eyes visible. They looked at Alycia the way one looks at something already lost.
“Your parents committed federal felonies,” Cole said, his tone perfectly, terrifyingly calm. “No one can save them p>
Alycia’s panic surged. She pointed a trembling finger at her flat stomach.
“What about our child?!” she screamed, tears dissolving into the rain on her face. “Are you going to let your own flesh and blood have grandparents in prison p>
Cole’s gaze dropped to her stomach. Revulsion twisted in his gut. That nonexistent child was the one chain still binding him — his twisted, distorted sense of duty to his dead brother.

The absolute, murderous certainty in his voice turned Alycia’s blood to ice. Her legs gave out completely. She fell backward off the ledge, landing hard on the safe side of the roof. She pressed her hands over her face and sobbed.
Cole did not look at her again. He turned and walked back toward the stairwell door.
The bodyguards stepped forward, grabbed Alycia by the arms, and pulled her across the wet roof.
She had lost everything. She was a prisoner now.
Cole descended the stairs. The hollow void in his chest continued to expand, slow and relentless, filling the space where everything he had destroyed used to be.

Inside the sterile, white P3 laboratory, the air was cool and perfectly filtered.
