“Well, you’re right,” Anika said softly, “but it’s early in the morning, and you rarely call at this hour. Is something wrong?”
Elena hesitated before answering. “Actually, there’s something I want to tell you. I heard Marcel is in the hospital, so I booked a flight to Douburgh. I haven’t seen you in a while, and I’d like to see Marcel too.”
Anika’s heart skipped a beat when she heard Marcel’s name.
Was Elena truly coming to visit Marcel, or did she want to talk about Anika’s relationship with him?
This was the worst possible timing. Katie’s attitude toward Anika was still ambiguous, and a serious conversation right now could easily make everything worse.
Trying to steer her away from it, Anika said gently, “Mom, Marcel is still unconscious. It would be a waste for you to come all the way here now. Maybe you can visit later, when he wakes up.”
“It’s not a problem,” Elena insisted. “I just want to see you, and I’ll stop by the hospital to visit Marcel. The ticket is already booked. I’ll land at one in the afternoon, so don’t forget to pick me up then.”
“Why don’t you come after Marcel has fully recovered?” Anika pleaded helplessly. “I already told you I’m fine. What’s the rush? Please, Mom.”

Elena grew suspicious at her tone and replied firmly, “Anika, I’m coming. No more negotiation. Don’t forget to pick me up this afternoon.” With that, she hung up.
“Mom?”
Staring at her phone, Anika felt completely at a loss. She had never been good at lying—she’d always been a well-behaved girl. Maybe Elena was pushing so hard because she sensed something in Anika’s hesitation.
Katie didn’t like her. And Anika was terrified Elena would clash with Katie the moment they met at the hospital.
Elena adored her daughter and would do anything to protect her. It was entirely possible she would try to drag Anika away, just to make sure Katie could never bully her again.
