In Nia’s heart, Annabel was the most beautiful person in the world—someone with a golden heart.
So when she heard those words, she only lifted her head and looked at Annabel pitifully, clutching the hem of Annabel’s top with wide, pleading eyes. Nia didn’t want to leave and go somewhere “safer.” She only wanted to stay with Annabel.
Annabel’s lips curved into a warm smile as she met the little girl’s gaze.
She adored Nia—the sweet child who had just lost her mother and endured something so traumatic. It was only natural that Nia would cling to someone now.
Annabel slowly crouched down and gently stroked the back of Nia’s head, coaxing her in a tender voice. “Be a good girl, Nia. This man isn’t a bad person. He’s here to help you. It’s still very dangerous out here, and there could be aftershocks at any time. Can you go with him to a safer place? You have to take care of yourself, okay? Smiling, Annabel extended her pinky finger toward the little girl.
Nia finally smiled too. She reached out and hooked her little finger with Annabel’s.
“I promise I’ll come to you. All right?” Annabel said, her tone turning serious. “Now go with this gentleman. It isn’t safe for you here p>
Annabel didn’t notice that a few reporters had happened to see their pinky swear—and had photographed it.
“Okay, I’ll take Nia away. The most important thing is to get them to a safe hospital nearby,” the rescue team leader said solemnly.
Annabel stood and replied, “Thank you. We still haven’t found the person we’re looking for. We’ll check if there’s anyone else nearby p>
Meanwhile, Anika was searching anxiously for Jared.
“Jared! Jared! Where are you?” she shouted, panic seeping into her voice.
