“I’m back,” Anika called as she opened the door and stepped inside.
She immediately noticed how dark it was. She turned her head to the left instinctively—and froze. The table was set with two beautiful candles, two glasses of red wine, and a flower vase filled with a fresh bouquet of gardenias.
Marcel was busy in the kitchen, but the moment he heard her, he turned off the stove, carried the pan-seared steak to the table, and smiled. “Anika, you’re home. Go wash up, and we’ll have dinner.”
Still surprised by the candles and flowers, Anika asked as she washed her hands, “What’s all this? Is today a special day?”
Marcel pulled out a chair for her. Once she sat, he moved to the opposite side and said, “You’ve been taking care of me ever since I was in the hospital, even though you were pregnant and exhausted all the time. So I cooked for you today. Would you like to try my steak?”
As he spoke, Marcel handed her the plate with the steak already cut into bite-sized pieces and took the uncut one for himself.
Anika’s heart softened. She knew Marcel was considerate, and she truly did have feelings for him.
“It’s… delicious. You must have worked hard to make all this, didn’t you?” Anika took a bite and chewed slowly, surprised by how good it was. Marcel had also prepared crispy French fries, roasted ham, and cream of mushroom soup.
Marcel shook his head. “I don’t feel tired at all when I’m cooking for you. I know how much you’ve suffered these past few days. But don’t worry. As long as I’m here, I won’t let you suffer.”

“Wait a moment. I’ll be back soon!”

A huge bouquet of red roses appeared in Marcel’s hands, and nestled inside it was a ring box. Anika froze, her heartbeat pounding like a drum.
Cradling the bouquet, Marcel walked up to her with solemn care. He dropped to one knee, opened the ring box, and looked up at her with a warm smile.
“Anika, I know it will be hard for you to accept me in such a short time, but I want to take care of you for the rest of our lives. As for love, I can wait for it. Will you give me a chance to take care of you and our baby? Will you marry me?”
In the gentle glow of the candlelight, his eyes burned with sincerity.
