Zacharias‘ private dining room was tucked away at the farthest end of the second floor. A plaque hung above the door: Clauderias Suite, carved by the two of them together when the restaurant first opened.
Back then, she had thought of it as a gesture of his devotion. Now, standing before the door, Anneliese found it unbearable to look at. She tore the plaque down, tossed it into the trash, and only then pushed the door open.
A heavy fragrance of roses swept over her. The entire room was filled with blooms, arranged to look warm and romantic.
Zacharias had changed into a light khaki suit, less severe than his usual dark ones, and the color gave him a rakish, almost princely air–well–matched with the sea of roses.
The moment he saw her, he stood and stepped forward, arms already reaching for her. “Babe p>

She sidestepped smoothly, pulled out a chair, and sat with her arms crossed.

She wasn’t surprised in the least. Fortunately, she had planned ahead, registering the divorce already. If she hadn’t, his defiance might have driven her to madness on the spot.
All she needed now was to keep him from finding out, get through the cooling–off period, and then force him to pick up the divorce certificate with her.
