“Anne, why show up by yourself? Shouldn’t you be dragging that ‘new‘ husband of yours along so Dad and the boys can size him up?” Selina’s tone was sweet, but the glint in her eyes gave her away. She wasn’t curious–she was setting a trap.
Anneliese already knew exactly what Selina was after. She wanted to humiliate her in front of the Goldings, to make her look like a two–timer who couldn’t keep her men straight.

Anneliese didn’t hesitate. She lifted her hand and swung.
Selina shrieked, clearly expecting it, and flung herself dramatically into Timothy’s arms. The slap missed, though not entirely–Anneliese’s ruby ring snagged a lock of Selina’s hair.
As Anneliese pulled her hand back, Selina let out a sad cry and grabbed her head.
“Ow! That stings!” Her eyes welled up with tears, as if she were the victim.

Anneliese had already gotten what she needed–the strand of hair wrapped around her ring. She saw no point in wasting any more words.
She smirked. “Worried about me? Please. What kind of respectable woman calls someone else’s husband ‘new‘ like he’s some commodity? My man belongs to me. I’m not about to let trash like you come near him, much less lay eyes on him p>
She didn’t even glance back at their outraged faces. She turned on her heel, hips swaying as she strode into the hotel.
As she stepped into the lobby, her gaze landed on the ruby ring still tangled in Selina’s hair. She fiddled with it, trying to free the strand. Then, a voice suddenly startled her from behind.
