Jonathan had already stationed someone to keep an eye on Selina. The moment he heard Selina had gone to see Anneliese, worry drove him out of the office to find her.
A short while earlier, he had spotted her sitting alone in the car, staring blankly ahead. She looked so small and lost. In that instant, he understood that Selina must have told her the truth.
“Has she been doing okay all these years?” Anneliese asked suddenly.
Jonathan hesitated for a moment before realizing she was talking about the real daughter of the White family, Sylvia Pollard.

All the unfair treatment and suffocating expectations can finally farle away. They bullied me, and I gave it all back. There’s nothing left to be upset about. Still, I feel angry and empty. It’s like my entire life has been a cruel joke p>
Jonathan kissed her gently on the forehead and rubbed her back with a steady hand. He understood. She had never known she wasn’t truly part of the White family, so every hope, disappointment, insult, and stretch of numb time had been real. She had endured it all.
