He eased her into a chair and gave her a bottle of water.
She accepted it, but didn’t take a sip. Jonathan stayed by her side, steady and silent.
His phone buzzed once, twice, then again. He ignored it.
Anneliese stirred. “The surgery could take hours. Don’t worry about me–go handle your work p>
She forced a smile, brittle and thin.
Jonathan silenced his phone without hesitation. “Work can wait. I’ll be here with you until your grandma’s out of surgery p>
He saw straight through her. She wasn’t nearly as unshakable as she pretended. That brave little smile only made his chest ache.
