Their voices dripped with sarcasm while Melanie wiped her tears in silence.
“Enough. Since she’s already here in the hospital, the two of you will drag her in if you have to. Your mom and I brought her into this world. She’s got the Whites‘ blood in her veins. She doesn’t get to disown us whenever it suits her. If it weren’t for the Whites, would some girl from the sticks have crossed paths with Jonathan? She thinks she can climb her way up using the Whites and then toss us aside once she’s done? Not a chance.” Timothy spoke in a low, stern voice.
Anneliese spent fifteen minutes talking to Nishay inside the ICU before the nurse gently asked her to leave.
She peeled off the protective gown and was about to ask the nurse about Nishay’s recovery when Perseus and Christopher showed up together.
Anneliese frowned. “What are you two doing here p>
Christopher came in hot, his voice already raised. “Anneliese, you’ve got some nerve asking me that! Mom’s been sick for days, and it’s all because of you. You didn’t even bother to visit her once. But that old hag with no blood ties to you? Suddenly you care so much… ah p>
He didn’t get to finish. Anneliese unscrewed the thermos lid beside her and threw the whole cup of water straight in his face.
“You crazy shrew!” Christopher sputtered, dripping wet. Thankfully, the water was only warm, not boiling.
Anneliese sneered coldly. “Look who’s talking. You’re the real hag here. Your whole family’s nothing but a bunch of decrepit old leeches p>

Christopher had come all the way just to curse Nishay, Getting drenched only fueled Anneliese’s fury, so she kicked him hard in the leg.

He lunged forward, but Perseus caught him by the arm.
“Let go, Perseus! Can’t you see how arrogant she is?” Christopher snapped.
Calmer than him, Perseus warned in a low voice, “Don’t forget why we’re here.” Christopher ground his teeth, barely holding himself back.
Only then did Perseus turn to Anneliese. “Ms. Morris is still our elder. She just had surgery. It’s only right that we came to visit p>
Before he could finish, Anneliese cut him off with no courtesy. “Visit? What kind of visit is this? You show up empty–handed and call it concern? If you can’t even act the part, don’t dress it up like you’re doing something noble p>
Back when Anneliese first returned to the Whites, she had begged them several times to let someone accompany her back to Baytree, so that Nishay could feel at ease and so she could pay respects to the couple who had raised her.
That was something any decent family would’ve done. But the Whites brushed it off like it was pointless. To them, Anneliese was never truly one of their own. The Whites were selfish to the bone. They looked down on Nishay and the people who had taken Anneliese in, and they sure as hell wouldn’t associate with anyone who couldn’t bring them profit.
“Anne, you’ve got it wrong. It’s not that we didn’t bring a gift. We just know Ms. Morris is still in the ICU. Once she’s moved to a regular room, we’ll come by properly,” Perseus explained, staying calm even though Anneliese had caught him out.
Anneliese curled a sarcastic smile. “Cut the act. Let me guess, Selina got hit and ran to tattletale. Now you’re dragging me to the ward so the whole family can gang up on me? Do you think I look like an idiot? I’m not going anywhere with you p>
After seeing that she wasn’t budging, Perseus‘ expression tensed, almost cracking. He frowned and said, “Anne, you’ve got it all wrong about us. Since you refuse to go see Mom, we’ll stay here. That way, we can keep an eye on Ms. Morris and help out if needed p>
With that, he grabbed a slightly flustered Christopher and plopped down on a nearby chair. His
posture said everything. If Anneliese didn’t cooperate, they weren’t backing off. They would just wait her out.

Anneliese studied them momentarily and then curved her lips into a sudden smile. “Fine. Let’s go p>
Since they’re so eager for me to see how pitiful their family looks, I might as well take a look. Come to think of it, the DNA test results I sent to the lab earlier are coming back today.
She stepped forward. Perseus and Christopher froze for a second, then hurried after her.
The hospital setting didn’t bother Anneliese. She wasn’t scared the Whites would overstep here.
When they reached Melanie’s room, she didn’t hesitate. She pushed the door open and walked in.
Timothy had already prepped Selina and Melanie, ensuring they understood the bigger picture. They needed to stay patient, play along, and win Anneliese first. Only then could they help the Whites navigate the tricky situation.
So when Anneliese entered, Melanie bit back the reprimand she had ready. Instead, she managed a surprised, almost delighted expression.
