“Sure,” he replied.
When the door closed, Rupert let out a sigh of relief. He pinched the bridge of his nose, his furrowed brow gradually smoothing out. That woman was a real headache.
The next morning, Candace came out of her room humming as she prepared breakfast.
The sound of footsteps caught her attention. With a bright smile, she turned around—only to see Rupert dressed in a suit. Clearly, he was heading to work.
Candace froze, and the smile on her face faded. Weren’t they supposed to have the engagement ceremony today?
Confused, she looked at Rupert and asked hesitantly, “Ron, aren’t we… aren’t we having our engagement party today? Why are you leaving for work?”
Rupert was taken aback too. He glanced down at his suit, and then it hit him. Smiling, he explained, “There’s a meeting at the company today. I have to attend, but I’ll be back afterward.”
Candace set the breakfast on the table, anxiety creeping into her voice. “Why do you have to go to work today?”
Her face revealed clear disappointment and dissatisfaction.
Rupert had no choice but to approach her at an unhurried pace. He wrapped his arms around her gently, patting her back as he soothed her in a soft voice. “It’s just a small meeting. It won’t take long. Besides, the party is in the evening, and I’ll definitely be back in time. I won’t leave you there all by yourself, alright?”
Candace’s expression softened into a smile. She slid her arm around Rupert’s shoulder and nodded lightly.
“Okay. I’ll wait for you.”
As long as she could get engaged to Rupert, Candace didn’t care whether he arrived late or not.
After breakfast, Rupert left for work. Candace let out a relieved sigh, content now that their engagement party was still happening that evening.

The joy in her heart made her feel as if she were walking on air, her steps light as a feather.
She lounged on the sofa lazily, scanning the room with a hint of boredom. Then, suddenly restless, she decided to call her old friend Amy—the one she used to sing with at the bar.
“Amy, what’s up? Are you available right now?”
“Hey, looks like you’ve got a lot on your plate today. Word is you’re getting engaged to the CEO of Benton Group. So, are you free to meet up?” Amy replied. She was a woman with long brown hair, holding the phone between her ear and shoulder while spritzing herself with a large—yet seemingly cheap—bottle of perfume.
Candace couldn’t help but chuckle. “Stop it. The engagement party isn’t until tonight. He has some business to handle at the company first. By the way, can you invite our other friends from the bar to come with me later to get my hair done? I can’t show up looking shabby tonight.”
“Sure thing. Sounds like you’ve really made it,” Amy teased. “They were just talking about you the other day. And since it’s not a good time to sing at the bar, I’m sure they’re free. Send me the address—should we meet at your place first, or just go there directly?”
