Candace had been trying to circle around the issue, and his straightforward reassurance shocked her into a grin. “Ron, you’re so kind.”
It was already evening when they returned to the Water Moon Community. After dinner, the two of them went off to their own work. But around eight o’clock that night, Candace walked to Rupert’s room and knocked on the door.
Rupert had just sent Annabel a message. When he heard the knock, he sent her another “do not disturb” message, turned off the screen, and slipped his phone under the pillow.
“Come in.”
Candace opened the door with a sultry look on her face. She was barely dressed, wearing lacy underwear and a skimpy outfit that covered only half of her body, leaving her smooth shoulders exposed. She had carefully straightened her hair until it lay perfectly in place, making her look even more feminine.
“Ron, you’re still awake.”
Rupert was shocked to see her like that and quickly averted his eyes, focusing instead on the novel in his hands. “It’s still early. Why aren’t you wearing more? What’s the matter?”
“No…” Her voice was gentler than usual as she sat on the bed beside him, running her fingers along his arm and across his chest. “I’m nervous and can’t sleep. I want to be with you. Ron, we’re getting engaged tomorrow. I’m excited.” Her fingers slid lower, tracing slow circles over his skin as she tried to unbutton his clothes.
“Candy, don’t do that.” Rupert caught her hand, stopping her.
Candace had played this game many times before, and Rupert always refused her with the same excuse. He hadn’t expected her to come to him tonight, but the ceremony was tomorrow—after that, he would finally be able to get rid of her.
“Ron.” Candace looked at him with concern. “We’ll be a couple soon, and I said I’m willing. You don’t have to worry about anything, really.”
Rupert had to play along, no matter how reluctant he felt.

He stroked Candace’s hair and spoke softly, almost as if soothing her. “You’re right. We’re going to be a couple soon. Of course we can’t rush that.”
He let out a quiet breath before continuing, “Besides, there are so many things to do tomorrow. You should go to bed early and get some rest. Let’s take our time.”

Lately, she had been trying tirelessly to sleep with Rupert, but he kept rebuffing her advances, always using his heavy workload as an excuse. Over time, her insecurity had only grown.
When Candace lifted her head to look at Rupert, a forlorn expression crossed her face. She wanted to argue, but his reasoning sounded plausible, leaving her with no solid ground to challenge him.
“We’re getting engaged tomorrow,” Rupert reminded her.
Hearing that, Candace’s worry and irritability vanished in an instant. After all, she would soon become Mrs. Benton. There was no need to panic about not consummating the relationship with Rupert just yet.
With that thought, Candace nodded obediently. She didn’t want to leave, but she had no other choice. Before she went, she looked at Rupert and spoke slowly, “I’ll go back to my room. Rest well, Ron.”
