Cole did not wait for the housekeeper. He turned and sprinted down the hallway, throwing open the door to the penthouse’s emergency utility closet.
He bypassed the standard toolboxes and grabbed the heavy, red-handled fire ax mounted on the back wall.
When he stepped back into the corridor, his eyes were completely bloodshot. He gripped the wooden handle so tightly his knuckles turned bone-white. He looked exactly like a man who had lost his mind entirely.
Mrs. Lynch saw the ax and let out a muffled scream. She clamped both hands over her mouth and slid down the wall, curling into a terrified ball in the corner, too paralyzed to move.
Cole marched back to the guest room door. He planted his feet wide, raised the heavy ax over his shoulder, and swung it forward with savage, brutal force.

The sharp steel blade bit deep into the expensive mahogany doorframe, inches from the biometric lock. Wood splinters exploded into the air. The deafening impact shook the floorboards.
