Inside the VIP hospital room, the heavy emotional storm had finally passed.
June lay back against the pillows, the sedatives and the sheer exhaustion of the morning having caught up with her at last. She was fast asleep, her breathing slow and even, her right hand resting gently on Snowball’s back as the rabbit curled into a warm white ball against her side.
Easton stood quietly beside the bed. He looked down at her sleeping face, then reached out with his uninjured left hand and carefully brushed a stray lock of hair from her forehead. His eyes were filled with a deep, possessive tenderness.
He turned and walked silently toward the door. He eased it shut behind him until it clicked.
Vera was leaning against the wall opposite the room, scrolling through her phone. She looked up the moment Easton stepped out.
