She hailed a passing taxi. When the driver looked back, she did not give him her apartment address. She gave him the address of a remote, private location far outside the city.
She was going to the Compton family mausoleum.
The sky hung low and heavy, smothered in thick, dark clouds.
Alycia had taken a yellow cab to the nearest small town outside the city limits. From there, she used the last of her emergency cash to hire a local, unlicensed driver, handing him nothing but a set of GPS coordinates. The battered sedan eventually pulled over on a remote dirt road beside a dense line of trees. She paid him and stepped out into the biting cold.
She positioned herself behind a large oak tree, studying the massive wrought-iron gates of the Compton family’s private mausoleum, searching for a way past the security system.
Then the crunch of tires on gravel broke the silence.
A black Range Rover rolled slowly up the driveway, bypassed the main gate, and stopped in front of a smaller, hidden side entrance. The driver’s door opened.

June walked with quiet purpose, paying no attention to the grand, elaborate tombs of the Compton patriarchs. She moved toward the most isolated corner of the property.
Alycia ducked behind a tall stone angel and peered around its marble wing.
June stopped before a simple, elegant black granite headstone. She knelt slowly on the damp grass and laid the white roses gently against the base of the stone.
